Yea no heater here either. looking forward to winter drives once its on the road. :lol:
but then again, the heater in my old clubby didn't work, so i just used a blanket on really cold mornings :lol: :lol: :lol:


Oh i forgot, it has had an electric thermo fan fitted... however I am undecided if i will keep it . it was just hard wired in. I removed all that rubbish when i was starting the task to clean up the mess of spliced twist wire connections under the dash, and i haven't re-connected it yet. If its a stock engine and the radiator works ok and its not going to be driven in traffic all that much it shouldn't really need it really should it??? The mechanical fan should be ok???

exactly!

the standard system is well and truly up to the job - it's just gotta be right. A lot of people think they need a thermo fan because their car doesn't cool properly, but something is wrong - the thermo fan is a bandaid

And what do i need to measure? , the distance that the pistons travel?? :?

You need to measure how far the piston travels, you can do this without removing the head. Just remove a spark plug and use a bit of wire.

You need to measure how far the piston travels, you can do this without removing the head. Just remove a spark plug and use a bit of wire.

Put motor on TDC #1 cylinder.
Stick a pencil in the #1 plughole, vertical. Mark it at top of plug hole.
Put same pencil in #2 plughole, vertical. mark again at top of plug hole.
Measure distance between the 2 marks-
76.2mm = 998 crank,
83.7mm = 1098 crank.

If you want to know the bore size, head has to come off.

Ok , I got a bit distracted, but i eventually got around to it. :)

But the result has got me even more confused...
I measured it a few different ways #1 top compared to #2, #1 top to #1 bottom etc , just to confirm . Every time the result is 90mm give or take a mil.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?????

If it's a Mini engine, you are just not holding the pencil vertical. Maybe it's too big in diameter.. find something smaller, like the tube out of a Biro.:wink:

well i double checked it with my first measuring device, a 4mm pants hanger with the clip cut off. still 90mm. Re did it with a piece of 2mm wire, slighty less, 87mm. definately not as little as 83.7mm. :lol: :lol:
oh well, i guess it almost certainly an 1098. I have no clue as to why my measuring doesn't add up. :? :oops:

either way, it seems as i got a little bonus. 1098 instead of a 998. 8) 8)

You got the performance engine then, 1098 was 8HP+ and 8ft/lb torque more than a stock 998. 8)
Good motors these 1098s, they go up hills without gearlever rowing.

Among the boxes of spares that i got with my beast i got this little guy

From the pics in the carb sticky, i can assume that it is a HS4 or 1-1/2"... Correct??? :)

Soo seeing as we have now established that i have a 1098 of unknown modification (probably stock). Is this carb of any use to me? the previous owner said it needed to be reco'd. Is it worth me doing that and fitting it to my engine??
It has a standard looking HS2 on it at the moment.
