As I still have all the Catlogues/Books and contacts with A/C part suppliers agents that I deal with you are welcome to come and have a look at the Many sizes and configurations of condensers in them and if need be I can order you one. Another option would be to go to a wrecking yard with a measuring tape and measure a few and perhaps you can find one that suits that way. But remember any condenser will need it's own Fan to draw air through it so remember to allow for depth. Also (on Minis) air sucked through the condenser will need it's own exit and must not flow out through the radiator as that will add super heat to the already hot radiator. Good luck

Hi Nick,
I see that you having some temp issues due to air/con.
After I finish my power steering project (which is soon, before 13/02/2011)
I am looking in to a alternative (12V fully electric) air con option for Mini’s not belt driven at all. You can even run air/con when car is not running.
I know some people will say why, you don’t need air/con, if cooling system okey you should not have any issues.
My answer is why not.
I do not have any temperature issues but engine bay is very full. Hard to work and when I go to shows not as presentable as much as I want.
Where is going to be placed you may ask well either under the rear seat or the boot. In your case (people with vans you can place behind the seat)
Anyways, if any one thought of this before or even done I would welcome their input, please share with us.

You realize you'll need an electric motor the size of a pool pump to run the thing?

Not really.
There are some out there already, I am quite optimistic about this idea.

The system has to exist in some cars: take a pruis for example: if the engine isn't running then the AC needs something to run it.

Id be interested to see whatever motor is is though, I mean in most little cars you can sure tell when the AC is on as they rob about even say 3kW, not much to an engine but its a lot of electricity! Need a big alternator that's for sure!

That is true. They drow up to 60 amp power out of your batterie but it can be overcome.
Real reason why I am interested with the idea is to have a eficent air con and get rid of the parts from engine bay.

The pruis is a good idea I loOked into it.

It runs on a 24 volt system and not easily adapatable.

The unit is a great idea, it's to big for the seat,

It's a boot option only, I just measured it!

I think I'm going to cut a small hole and
Use a mega effcient fan like a small spal and mount
It to the side.

as an idea ***

you could run a front mount rad & where the old side rad sat sit a condensor there?

This is the factory setup, and I think it would be very hard to improve on.
Putting compressors and condensers in the boot could be done sure, but where you stash your tools if you have a second engine compartment in the back?

Guys in USA running VTECS etc for power put it inside the rear subframe, with a fan above it.
Works for them... they have nice clean roads!
Might work here too if you stick to the bitumen.

Had a measure in a mini engine bay today, and agree with Harley. The factory set up with the condenser at the side would be hard to better, and I think that is where we'd end up anyway. What are the dimensions of the condenser Harley ? Do you have a part number and supplier?

Nick, at the moment I'm building a mini very slowly and air conditioning is on the wish list. I'll post full details of my system when it's finished.

Next time the covers are off I'll see what I can find.
For reference, you can buy the compressors brand new from the UK.

This the type of compressor I was referring to;
http://www.evdrive.com/bmw_project/airconditioning.html
and also I am searching for solid-state air/cons too(they are for very small areas I think)

Years ago I spent some time measuring condensers in a wreckers. A Toyota Tercel 4x4 1983-85 (model code AL25) air con condenser was very close to the same dimensions as a Mini radiator. I don't have the exact measurements anymore, as I've long since lost the piece of paper. :(

Cheers,

ah nice one does this on 12v or 24v? thats same idea as the pirus set up.

cool small unit

http://www.masterflux.com/products/condensingunits/

i don't think it's going to be cheap but a very compact way of doing aircon.

not sure if the alternator would be man enough might need to upgrade.

i emailed them anyways to ask a few questions.
