Here's some photo's of my crankshaft and bearings after 14 meetings. marginal signs of wear on the bearings. But the crank looks and feels and measures like it is brand new. Pity I couldn't say the same about the Camshaft.

hey Graham

Graham, I am a bit confused about the thread. You said that it was the crank in your race engine and you said the camshaft was not good, but what happened to the underside of No 3 piston. A lot of nasty dents and hammering marks around the gudeon pin area.
Image

The center brg has a nasty mark near the shell tang where the crank journal has ripped thru the white metal and exposed the copper backing. Just in that one spot, the rest of the brg looks good apart from that.
Image

any ideas on what caused these problems. I would be worried if I found things like that in a engine I just pulled down.
It would be a crying shame to destroy a nice crank like that from some other little fault in the engine.

Hi David
Thats what happens when you drop the spider drive when changing cams on the dyno we thought it fell into the bottom of the gear box but it was sitting on the windage tray but it found its way to the bottom in the end,you just can't bad luck some times

Fair enough, big risk though.

I ordered this crank from Seven Enterprises and it was prepped in Salem, Michigan shop where they get all their race cranks prepared.

Image

Drilled, wedged (but only for balancing), oilways improved and heat treated, new A+ crank.

Now, all I need to do is screw up the courage to put it in the heart of a Turbo A Series....

Always amazed at the craftmanship and abuse that race cranks are subject to.

I'm intrigued by this crank.8)
Would the average punter in a road car feel/notice the difference with this crank?

No. not nessasary for a road car, only required if you are chasing the last little bit of HP from a race engine and even thats debatable. You can modify a std crankshaft and rods and get the same effect, for far less money.

Arguably with less reliability at the limit, though..

Do you really think we would go to all this trouble if we could get the same effect and reliability out of a std crank and rods?
By the time you prep the crank or pay some one to do it it can cost you up to 1k or more and you still have an old second hand crank that is going to brake more sooner than later, if you put a good crank rods and pistons from the start the out lay is high but in the long run it's cheap.
Take a look at Greig Malaures car [ex car now] i built that motor some 6 or 7 years ago and it's seen a lot of hard race miles and has never broken the bottom end to this day,now owned by lindsay of Minis Plus and i hope he has the same results that Greig had, i belive he took out first place at the hill climb on the week end and set a new record.
You victorians should be very proud of that hill climb track possibly the best in australia, i think its called haunted hills some ones bound to correct me if im wrong, so come on David get out of the dark ages and move on.

So would the average punter notice a difference in smoothness/less vibration at road speeds?

The question was...

Would the average punter in a road car feel/notice the difference with this crank?

I answered... No. I belive this type of crank would be a waste of money in a road car. As for a race engine, hey if you have the money, spend it on the best components available, every little bit helps find that extra HP. - But remember, its not just the engine that wins races.

[Edit] Yes, Haunted Hills hillclimb track is very good but there not much run off is you have a "moment". We had a P76 club day there a while ago, not much fun in a 6cyl auto tho...
