12G295 is the best factory head but a 12G202 can better it with ALOT of work.

The head it comes with is a very good head to be modified. Graham Russell in North Rocks does a very good job of modding these heads from mild to wild.

Costs vary depending of how far you want to go with it.

if its an 1100 head, chances are thats going to be better than a 998 12g202, as i think it has larger valves?

as most have said though, a 295 is the best stock head, but my 202 will show it up...

I am not sure there is any difference between a 998 and 1100 12g202 head. The major difference between the two motors was the crankshaft and the conrods.

The 295 head was a superior head and a true sports head but they are hard to find and expensive and most likely need reconditioning in anycase as well as shaving to bring the compression up to scratch.

The stock 202 of either a 998 or a 1100 (if there is a difference) is a better head to modify as it has better casting to begin with and better tolerances to being modified for larger valves, gas flowing and chamber reshaping.

Hey all,

850's & 998's got the early heads with 1 & 1/16" inlets and *small* ports. 24.5cc chambers (& lots of part #'s such as 12A1451)

All the Oz 1098s got the 12G202 head, which is 1 & 5/32" inlets (this head also used on 997 coopers). 26.2cc chambers.

The good guy 295/206 heads have 1 & 7/32" inlets & 28.3cc chambers.

Go the 202 head for "mostly stock" - the 850/998 head will raise your compression, but they flow the worst.

Opposite with the 295 head.

cheers,

I would just like to point out that these smallbore heads (also the CAM4004 `smog' head) have 1.090" inlets, not 1-1/16" as so erroneously shown on the Mini web info listings.
Check any workshop manual..

Hey...!

Just learnt something today... Doc u are right, it shouldn't be 1/16" but 3/32" instead!

So where did this 1/16" malarkey start? I looked through a lot of the stuff I grabbed off the net over the years, and ALL of it uses 1/16", except those which use metric, which got it right.

For those who think we're splitting hairs, the difference is :

1 & 1/16" = 26.99mm
1 & 3/32" = 27.78mm

Which may not look like a lot, but when you only have a seat that's 90 thou wide....

Gotta update all my info and commit it to memory now :P

cheers,

Jacob
