When I posed the question about reliability if mated to a Cooper S motor it was from a BMC production and support viewpoint. In other words, would BMC be happy to provide full warranty on automatic Cooper S's, including those used in motor sport (rallies, rallycross, motorkhanas, races)? I've had no experience with the Mini automatic transmissions, hence I rely on advice for those who do know.

If this conversation was physical rather than virtual I'd throw you some peanuts.

About the closest I guess would be some 'custom' companies (eg Wood & Picket etc) in the UK during late 60's & early 70's offering autos on Cooper S's. Now I've only read about these and it would be likely to be 1100S with an auto, spec'd up to Cooper S.

Isn't there a problem with a very small range of choices of diff ratio in the 'matic? Ok for a small engine on 10" wheels or for a larger engine on 12" but not too good for a Cooper S on 10s?

Yeah the stock diff in early boxes was 3.26:1, but with the auto's drop gear ratio the FD ratio worked out to 3.76:1.
Gearing was a bit short with a 1275, as you say.
My mate dropped an 1100S auto into his Mini.Matic, so he then ran 12" front wheels on it...

A few years ago there used to be a guy from Vic with an auto S. I strongly doubt it was factory but it was quick... The setup was apparently quite robust and he ran motorkhanas pretty successfully.....

Cheers, Ian

still is - Peter Van Alkemade - he calls it a cooper-s-matic, but pretty sure it's just a 1275 in a matic

haven't seen him at Hay for a couple of years though

He's a mate of mine. He's been busy with his business the last few years.

His car is a Matic with all the Cooper S stuff fitted to make what he calls an S-Matic. Current engine is a late 1275 A+ Auto like mine with twin carbs and extractors. His wife's Moke has ex Morris 1300 Auto drivetrain in it now too.
