I took my leads off the plugs and marked them with a permanant marker so i would know where they go.

I have left the other ends on the distributor cap. The timing hasnt been touched although the cap was taken off.

Now the problem is that permanant marker's aernt so permanant. So now i dont know where which lead goes, or even if my cap is on the right way.

It's the standard lucas distributor, perhaps someone could tell me or post a pic?

Can you post a photo of the distributer so we know its in the right position please. Often they are 180 degrees out of position and that would just cause you more grief. Its no big if it is but the leads need to go differently.

The firing order is 1-3-4-2 and thats the way the leads go but let us see its in the STANDARD position first - Ie with the vaccuum advance bell facing at about two o'clock

If you dizzy is set up correctly (like Mike Byron stated above) then you have the leads in the wrong position.

Currently the leads (as shown in the photo) go 1-3-2-4.

You need to swap the plugs on cylinders 2 and 4 (1 is closest to the radiator). The dizzy spins anti-clock wise when the engine is running.

In order to see if your dizzy is set up the 'normal' way you have to pop the cap off and set the motor to the firing stroke on #1. This isn't essential though.

Okay - you need to get the motor on top dead centre on the firing stroke. The proper way to do this is to take off the rocker cover and see the number one piston (closest to the radiator) has both valves closed and number four has the rockers just starting to move.

But lets take a guess since the timing hasn't been changed.

Take off the distributer cap and the rotor button at that point is pointing at the number one position on the dizzy cap. Its the metal thing on the dizzy cap and the dizzy cap only goes on one way. Thats number lead. Hit the starer motor for a second so you know which way the rotor turns - get help if yyou need it !!!

Once you know, the next metal thingo is cylinder number three. put the the lead on.

Then its simple - the next one is number four and the last one is number two. Start the motor - the heater outlet on the head doesn;t have a hose on it so it will spit out water.

Oh btw - disregard the vaccuum advance comments - its a different dizzy

Ok so the rotor spins anti-clockwise.

You guys appear to give conflictive advice - is the firing order 1-3-4-2 ?
Or 1-4-2-3 ?

Ok how about now -

It's still not starting, maybe the problem is something else. I cleaned the plugs as i thought maybe it was flooded. There is a strong spark and they were wet from getting fuel

can anyone confirm if this is right? Because at the moment i can't even get it to kick over on aerostart. I am getting a good spark...

The leads are right, however if the dissy drive spindle has been out and not put back the right way, it still might be out.

Ok, is the coil getting power? If you have an assistant to help you pull the HT lead from the coil to the dizzy and earth on the engine block. This will tell you if the coil is working fine. You should get 4 evenly spaced sparks as the motor cranks.

If that checks out fine then earth one of the individual leads against the block to make sure your rotor button etc is in reasonable nick.

That is a start but I still think you should whip the rocker cover off and put #1 on the firing stroke. It will allow everyone to be more sure that the dizzy is setup correctly. Also take a photo of where the rotor is pointing when #1 is at TDC on the firing stroke.

Another thing I have just thought of - I know you said the timing hasn't been touched but are you sure the dizzy hasn't been bumped out of position? It isn't that much effort to check the timing statically.

Coil checks out fine. I checked every lead with the spark plug on the end and they are all getting a spark.

Here is the rocker cover off, does this timing look ok?

I will replace the spark plugs as i broke a couple taking them off .
