Powder coating can be applied in 3 ways,

Electrically polarise each item and they electrically attach before mechanically locking when the powder is melted on the part in an oven.

Fluidised bed where the part is preheated and submersed in a mist of powder (normally a bath) The powder melts on contact with the hot part

Premelt Powder where the powder is melted as it leaves the gun and cools when it hits the object.

At home the easiest way is fluidised bed, gear for parts. Commercially it's Electrically and some fluidised, Premelt is very uncommon due to performance of coat adhesion and finish.

If you want a special finish with long term life go for a metal spray (yes it's actually 100% metal) or ceramic.

Sand blasted the sub frame to bare metal, primed and painted automotive black...8 years later still good!

In my view powder coating is only of limited use in an automotive application, heat/engine/exhaust/brakes, cold/snow/salt/deicers, rain/sand/road grit/wind, oil/brake fluid/fuels, etc....not your living room ornament.

i got offered to have my subframes galvanised, would that be worth it?

No.
Australian subframes don't suffer from the rust problems that the overseas places do. Have you ever seen a badly rusted subframe in Australia? (I have, it was a very modified one fitted to a car trailer)
I would just paint it properly and let it last another 40 years!

but it wouldn't hurt would it? it's just that the guy offered to do both subframes for 80 bucks apiece with some other chassis work, and i'm a little pushed for time at home to paint them nicely atm.

It could hurt. It depends on the temperature of the gal process. I have heard of problems with distortion with other things.
Talk to the guy and see what he says. He will have a better idea.

If he stuffs it up remember it is only a subframe. You can always get another one easily enough.

I reckon you should have taken the subframe back to the powdercoaters for a warranty job - their prep must've been to blame...

I have never been happy with powdercoat on anything. It is the most over rated stuff around.
I prefer real paint and not electrically applied oven baked dust.

For things like subframes I reckon that a properly applied Kill Rust system is hard to beat. The epoxy top coat cures hard and glossy (or matt if that's what you want)
