Random thought after reading comments in adamstuart's teardrop camper thread: has anyone ever done (or heard of) a headliner made of a flexible light grade plywood or similar? Obviously nothing too solid, but something different to the usual vinyl / fabric headliners.

I'm thinking Peter Sellers, but on the inside :D

It would be very tricky to do. You would probably want to start with the early English style headliner that mounts in two halves on frames, that way you could work on it outside the car. You can get curving ply, but it will only bend easily in one direction so compound curves aren't easily done. Otherwise you could try steam forming thin veneer to the shape, cutting out wedges where it has to taper in to form the compound curves at the front and rear, but you'd need something rigid to glue it to.

You could do it in the fake woodgrain vinyl wrap that is used for car interiors. It would look pretty ordinary though.

There's a Woody Traveller in the US that has been veneered internally and on the rear panels with real wood veneer. The compund curves around the door frames were apparently the hardest to do. It looks OK, if you're really into wood.

I had an idea about thin form flexible ply with mounts attached so that I could use the headlines crossbars, but I forgot about the problem of complex curves. Cheers Tim.

Would have lent itself nicely to the perfect vanity plate: IGOTWOOD.

Almost as bad as that previous "wood" joke

(Cue wood joke thread in poolroom...)

[edit: typo]
