No just disconnected it all, pulled it out, cleaned it up, cleaned up all connections and refitted. Am assuming i'd have to purchase one from UK. After cracking the ....s with the rover, went and worked on the minimatic. Calmed down, got over my hissy fit and going to enlist some help from others who actually know what they are looking at. I clearly don't have a clue :)

When it comes to any sensors on the engine, if they;ve been pulled out and cleaned up that won't get them working if they're faulty.
You'd have to try another one to find out what's going on.

Anyone know whats involved with converting back to carb?
cheers

from what I've seen on some of the UK forums, it's piss easy - just keep the SPI ignition and replace the injection manifold with a carb

here's one: http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/in ... +SPI++carb

As a side note, if its the crank sensor thats crook, and you take the injection manifold off and keep the current distributor, it may still carry on as the ECU determines the ignition timing from.....the cranks sensor.

To do the job properly, I'd suggest removing the whole injection system and ECU, dizzy, etc, then replace with a new electronic dizzy and suitable carb, with an idle up valve if you have AC.

Or find the faulty sensor and fix it .. would be a shame to get rid of the injection and ignition for the sake of a $20 sensor ?

you just have to find which one !

option #3 replace the computer with a haltech unit they use commodore (bosch) sensors you can keep the injection and see what sensors are doing from your laptop

just my 2c worth as i am a injection fan

You don't need that computer. There is nothing wrong with the factory setup, when it works anyway.
Telling somone to replace their operational computer with another one at $1000 is a waste of a $1000 in my opinion. He doesn't want any performance mods, just to get what he has running again.

For the amount of effort involved in changing the CAS, do that instead of getting rid the the SPi setup.

Yes they are an absolute crap when they aren't running properly, but once the SPi IS running properly you won't regret keeping it.

You replace the rover sensors with new ( or ones from a wrecked commodore )

Ok so replacing the computer is over kill but so is throwing it all away in favor of a su and points .. I know it's frustrating but all this will only be one sensor ...

Thanks guys, yeah im starting to think crank angle sensor the more i read up on it. It was the only sensor that was absolutley filthy. Interesting thing i did notice the more I pulled apart is that the socket that connects to the idle stepper motor has 3 wires attached. only 2 are connected the other one has snapped off and the whole plug seems to have melted?! Could this be one of the many things causing my issues?

Have you looked at this yet the melted wires /socket
As I said only one sensor / connection will throw it out

I'm surprised its still going with a crook wire on the stepper motor, cause that won't be adjusting idle speed at all, so there will only be one engine temperature where it runs at its best, and if the AC is on that could change things too.

I've just realised that my broken wire isn't on the stepper motor, its on the throttle position switch.. and no, im not blond, just have blond moments... i think we have a winner. would explain a lot of the issues. Seems I had misread the diagrams about what black box is what. Thanks for all that commented. Now I don't suppose anyone has a spare TPS connector plug complete with some wires that isn't knackered laying about that they'd want to sell?
