Just had an email from Minispares - my gearbox rebuild kit on order (MSG20) is out of stock and not known when it will be IN stock. With no delivery date, they may not hold the rest of the goodies and will send in two shipments.

I was waiting for the parts to rebuild the gearbox, so I can finish rebuilding the engine (or more correctly Dr Mini was), then put it all back together in time for rego renewal time. I've got bits of the engine spread all over the district (my garage, docs' garage, Teejays).
On top of the ARP bolt fiasco, today has been pretty average in the mini ownership stakes. :?

Just make sure they dont send some of your goods anyway, then some more separately with UPS and then the rebuild kit when its available with the most expensive express UPS service - all 3 shipments in 3 days and without your knowledge. And then charge you for all 3 shipping costs.

Cant happen you say?.....

I would cancel the rebuild kit, get what you need locally. Your gearbox is in pretty good condition already.

Yeah. I think what I might do is ring england tonight and confirm exactly what is being shipped and when. If they still don't know when the rebuild kit is coming into stock, I will cancel it.
I may have to resort to buying the individual gaskets though as Karcraft are out of stock of the gasket kits, and Minispares don't seem to have a separate Gasket kit over and above the rebuild kit.
Karcraft do have the bearing kits in stock for around $100.
From looking at the kit and what comes in it, I think I can get away with buying a gasket kit (or individual equivalents) and a bearing kit and re-use everything else plus the parts still coming from Minispares (1st motion & laygear, centre oil pickup, comp pin, planetary gears).
Wish me luck!

You will need a layshaft, too. Can get from Karcraft or MG Heritage. PM sent.

By the way, Minispares will post via std post, you just have to TELL them thats what you want. They tried to charge me 40pounds to ship to master cylinders via UPS. They sent them via std post registered for 12pounds.... you just have to let them know.

Cheers

Aaron

The real reason they send UPS etc is they get kickbacks, and it's easier for them.
If they send via post you are allowed up to $1K value (in theory) before you get pinged for GST and import duty.
If it comes via courier the limit for this is $400.
If you are buying lotsa stuff and want to be a smartie and split the delivery, make sure they arrive a week or more apart.. Customs are not dumb people...

Ok rang Matt. Took about 15mins on the phone but think it is sorted - except they still haven't quoted shipping. They're sending an email, would've been nice to get it all sorted in one phone call tonight.
Cancelled Rebuild kit and replaced with an order just for the gaskets that are normally in the kit plus the diff ones. Assuming I confirm shipping tonight, it should leave tomorrow and be here in about a week.
Will be on the phone to Karcraft tomorrow to order the bearing kit, then we should be in business.

From memory they dont include a timing cover gasket in the kit (saved by the doc again) so get that from Karcraft too.

I've got a full engine gasket set so should be right for that, but thanks anyway.
I ordered and received the bearing kit from Karcraft today (can't knock their service!). Still nothing from Minispares - supposedly sending the shipping quote by email.
Karcraft told me the bearing kit included the idler bearing but when it arrived it didn't, so will have to get one of those. Spoke to mark not greg, so should have checked more closely. They're also out of diff side washers, so couldn't get those.
Still subject to Minispares, we're getting back on track.

I've got 2 new idler bearings here if you want 'em..

re the diff side washers- the last 3 Mk2 S boxes I pulled down all had bronze side washers in there.
Better- they don't die from old age and break up like fibre ones can.
Dunno if they were factory fitted or what- they don't look home made. :?
