Hi guys, just my 2c worth here. I regularly have my mini dynoed on the chassis rollers and i have placed temperature probes at the front of the car (grill) and near the trumpets of the weber to measure the temp differential and from my findings the difference is insignificant. The temps were taken with the bonnet on to simulate the car on the track with the dyno fan pushing air. Maybe the ram air effect from one of these setups could help but i have not tested this.

edit--> sorry no pics of it , but all it was a Fuel Funnell zip-tied to the grille & fed air to a plastic ice-cream bucket type thing around the weber air-filter

I like the sound of this :D

I'm running a 45 DCOE, with the ole cut out firewall trick and I just removed the heater and re-routed the air intake from that to a cut out to the new box section. Its not really the temperature issue it's the availability of air, and with the carbie jammed back in the firewall there isn't a lot of circulating flow and you can choke the larger inlet carbie set ups.

You sure about that? Take a look at the Nb & Nc race guys setups, they don't seem to have that problem making between 140 - 160HP!

There is definitely airflow back there - it's pressurised..

CAI are a waste of time on a mini IMO.

There is a big hole in the front of the car that is only partly covered by the grille.
As you travel along air is forced through the grille where it must find its own way out.
Some air goes out through the radiator even though there is a fan that is hindering airflow at those speeds.
Most of the air goes under the car taking excess oil with it.
Air travels over and around the motor and down the firewall taking most of the exhaust heat with it.
The engine bay is pressurised to a degree.

there was a discussion over on PF that brought this to my mind, but regarding MX5's and their intakes being right up against the firewall and reverse cowl's on V8's;

apparently the base of the windshield is a high pressure zone - it's why the intake for your cabin aircon etc is there - so you'd be better off trying to draw in air from there?

Sure some racers won't use cold intakes, probably because they are running the correct choke size in their weber. An undersized choke will benefit from the higher dynamic pressure that the cold air induction will provide. And on the otherhand, if the choke is too big then you won't see any gains with the system. So some will get gains, some won't. It's just a cheap fix. Realistically though you shoulnt be running a weber unless you have modified your engine to need that amount of air provided by the weber.

this is what I did on my lasty min.
work ok...made it a bit quitier..

no real power gain..lol it just looked different.

i used a ram flow air filter as a template.

Image

cut a hole shape in the mesh part to hold the piping...i used plastic pipe...
hot melted it into place..

i then covered the whole thing in cloth streched it over to get a nice shape hot melted the edges to hold it in place and then fiberglass resined the hole thing to make it go hard
I then used fiberglass to make it hard and strong and protect it from the heat...
....undercoated it...painted it...

job done. ...

there was a how to do this ages ago but links dont work now ..
