Hi all,

I'm in the process of stripping the engine bay, and the black ashpalty seam sealer stuff is a nuisance. I've painted over it before with a few patch fixes, but it always cracks and looks bad. Some of the old seam sealer has cracked and fallen off anyway.

So, can I just get rid of it, or will I need to replace it with something to prevent rusting? I just want to paint onto something solid!

If you're taking it down to bare metal (ie the entire engine bay), KBS Rustguard (Aussie POR15) works a treat over the entire underside of the engine bay bulkhead (and in fact on all the underside bits!!). Follow up with a coat of primer whilst it is still tacky and then paint rubberised seam sealer (buy from an auto paint shop) on all the seams. That Tassie weather won't get anywhere near the metal once the topcoat goes on!! Here's what I did:

I used around 250 ml of KBr rustguard (3 coats) and around 150ml of seam sealer for the engine bay so surprisingly not much!!
