Hi,

Just a brief rundown on the situation.

My mini was idling okay though when i gave it a bit of gas it lacked power and it would backfire from the carb & exhaust end.

Anyway, few people on this forum suggested that it may be as simple as a new condenser.

Now, I replaced the condenser and cleaned the points with fine grade sandpaper. Put everything back together and now there is no spark,.

I checked that the plastic washer was on right, checked the plugs, cap, rotor, rotor brush, internal wires inside the dissy and outside the dizzy for continuity with a multimeter etc etc. ALL OK.

I sprayed a bit of WD40 in the dissy and the spark came back, though as it dried i lost the spark again.

Any ideas or suggestions are much appreciated??

Thanks

Rocco

How is your timing?
Are you getting sufficient dwell angle?
You'll need a timing light and a dwell meter to get these right.

It certainly sounds point related.

Thanks, though the timing & dwell are okay, well were okay when the engine was running.

Check the condenser again, you may have got a faulty one!

If WD40 fixed it but temporarily I'd say either the cap is dirty, or else has a crack in it..
Spray it with WD40 inside and out, wipe dry with tissues, spray inside again then refit...

Thanks All !

Got the spark back and the engine runs, though barely!!

Brings me back to my original problem, engine idles sort of okay, but when i give it a bit of gas it backfires from the exhaust and its barely driveable.

Anyway, there is a new condenser installed, so i guess i can rule that one out.

I have not mucked around with the timing or carbies and I know that they were fine prior to this issue arising, so any suggestions on what i should try next.

Thanks

Roc

Check the points gap- when they close up, weird things happen.
Last time it happened to me (moons ago) in my 1310S the engine would barely run under 4000 then went like a rocket to 7000.
I then binned the points, converted dizzy to electronic, and never looked back...

If points gap is OK (.015"), try another coil- they can act strange when on the way out, as gafmo found recently.

We had a similar issue on our Mini K several years ago, it would run on 3 cylinders and you could hardly move it out of the garage, it would then clear and run perfect for a few minutes then die again and back onto what felt like 2 or 3 cylinders, it was undriveable, tried points, coil etc and finally noticed the wire in the dissy the one from the coil to the points was hanging by a couple of strands of wire, this was inside the dissy, at a quick look it appeared ok but when I moved it I noticed that it was almost broken off, the earth lead inside the dissy was not too good either. I replaced the complete lead from the coil to the points and it has run fine ever since. Might be something to have a look at, just a thought.
