I had the pleasure of meeting Ivan whilst up at Oz50.

I might call him tomorrow.

We used his car park for repairs on my car.

Hi jtr850, when I did my matic, I took one of the rear cover plates off the block and took to my local paint shop who cleaned it up and copied the paint. the result is below

As far as I know the engine is original and hasn't been repainted prior to me pulling it out, as per the pic below

But when I was stripping all the old paint off, it appeared to be a dark green with a goldy/bronze coat over the top as you can see on the last picture where the starter motor should be. Hope this helps.

That's from the Australian respray. A lot of engines are like this, they came out from the UK painted in their green colour, then got repainted in gold here. You'll sometimes find that the back of the starter motor and the block behind the starter motor are still green.

This is the colour of the engine in the Morris 1100 auto that I just sold, see that there is a couple of chips in the paint with the UK green showing underneath....

This is the original starter off my Morris 1100 showing how the factory painted the locally assembled motors...

This is the 1275 that I just fitted to my Morris 1100. It has been painted with gold engine paint from Mini King.

I ended up cleaning some of the bits off of the engine and found something interesting.

Below: Tappet Chest RH Cover

It is interesting to see gold paint under the top layer. Is it possible that the gold coat was a first coat and then a green metallic laid ontop?

Below: Differential Housing

Some more colour samples.

I am Sure The MINI MATIC Motor assy was painted what we call Gold, over the Top of the UK green
I am also Sure The MINI K was Painted Gold Except For the Poverty Pack which was Painted Green ( Same as Cooper S )
The motors in The Mini Van Produced at the same time as The Mini K was also Painted Green ( Same as Cooper S )

that pic of the engine sitting on the white circle is very similar to my colours.
The silver and greeny-gold bits are exactly the same and my cylinder head is blue tho

John,
Does the gold look like the colour on the differential housing?
or does it look like one of the other pics above? (if so, which one).

I am just curious as to what I am to expect.
Thanks

The colour on the top right hand part of the side cover is very close to the original
colour over the Years I think because of Heat, Oil etc The colour changes

The gold really does lose a lot of colour in 40 years.
In the engine photos in the brochures for the Morris 1100 the colour always looks way too bright until you buy a new tin of paint and return it back to new!

<<<< There is an engine shot of a Morris 1100 in my avatar if you are quick! Compare that to my freshly repainted motor.

I will take a few pics over the weekend of the engine colour of our Mini K which we have had since new and the motor has never been out.
As someone has all ready pointed out the colour has probably faded and changed after 40 years.

Righty-oh , found the bloody recharger for the camera , little bugger made itself hard to find , so my 1275 auto is factory sprayed 222 Light Bronze Green , there are several small patches of overspray but its very, very obvious there is no Gold paint anywhere

Image

the paint on the gearbox has faded to a pale green silver , on the head a slightly darker pale green silver , there is no paint under the 222 Light Bronze Green

I ended up speaking to Ivan Glasby today. He told me that the last Matic he worked on was a 69 - so a mk2. The engine was an ugly gold colour.

That makes sense to me as the Mini K engine (which the mk2 took after) had the gold engine.

I am still not convinced that the mk1 had a gold engine.

Right now I am convinced that the mk1 had the light metallic green paint.

Bryan from Links thinks that the car had something like Sherwood Green Metallic.
