Ok over the years/days/minutes, there have been questions about the numberplate flap removal.
So I thought i'd How to it.

1. Ok so we start by unscrewing the plate from the flap.
2. Underneath the flap there should be 6 countersunk bolts.
3. Locate and loosen these.
4. Trace and unplug the wires leading to the numberplate light.
5. Remove bolts that hold flap hinges and remove flap.
6. The area underneath the hinge on the body may have a small amount of surface rust- in this case (like mine), dust it off and mask and spray with black or whatever you have on your shelves.
7. Once dry, bring numberplate up to the body recess and mark out for holes to be drilled. Measure twice, drill once! Be careful at this stage- dont slip!
8. Drill the holes and put some nail polish around the bare metal edges so it doesnt rust out later on.
9. Attach numberplate to body- I used 316 grade stainless steel bolts and acorn nut thingos- see the pics.
10. Mark out holes for number plate light and drill these holes.
11. Re-route wiring through another hole in the boot lid for the numberplate hole or use an existing one.
12. Check that the light still works and step back and admire your work.

A very easy job, isnt it?

Comments on the pics appreciated too :)

But I like my numberplate flap

I makes me laugh to have something there that was designed so that you could drive along with your boot open and your numberplate could still be seen :D

Does that make it legal ? nowadays?

:) Yeah its a pretty novel and silly idea.

Not sure about the laws..
I'd say that you are allowed to drive around with your boot open only if you have to and only if the items inside are securely secured.

LOL! I didn't know what that flap was for! What a stupid idea! I don't have the flap anymore, but I didn't do the mod myself.

Issigonis would turn in his grave at the thought..
I think it was a good idea (in theory...) but after 35 years I won't trust my boot strap wires.
Anyhow, if you drove around like this surely the car would get full of exhaust etc fumes? Boot area is not sealed off around rear seat.

I once saw a sigma with its boot open. Has this massive black thing in the back, i immediately speed up to investigate. Turned out to be a giant rotwieler type cross DOG! I wish camera phones were around when I saw this!

Yeah i don't usually do stuff on my mini.
But i should! :)

Hmm i'm running out of things to do on it that i can do myself.
Thoughts anyone?
Like even basic stuff.
I've put a cigarette socket in the back where the ashtray goes for the passenger to plug in their phone charger or discman/other device when on long trips- i'm kind like that :)

So yeah... any other little things that you can think of?

I know something you should do......

Improve your braking reation time. Yeah.

Nice job on the plate flap. You should have put rubber spacers between the numberplate and bootlid though. Not only will it vibrate/rattle with your sub, but dirt and leaves and crap WILL get stuck behind it - might scratch the paint behind/around the number plate. Just a thought.

It really does make the back of the car look less busy, doesnt it! 8)

Now all you need to do is get rid of your square boot badge

Does your grille have an S badge on it????? I cant remember...

When you do get round to fixing it, why don't you give a step-by-step on front end repairs?
