 Post subject: Rebuilding Water Pumps

Has anybody bothered to rebuild cast impeller type water pumps ?.
Can you buy kits for them , if so , where from , and, is it worth it ?
Seems a waste to just bin it , looks like it has plenty of life in it .

Reason i ask is , that i took mine off because it was leaking out of the shaft ,
but when i had a look at it , it still looks brand new inside , the impeller is as clean as ,
there is no movement in the shaft , bearing feels fine .

I have a mate who sells old/antique spare parts and is into Morris Minors.
He says the proper rebuild kits are NLA but thinks there is a Jag kit that can be used, if you can get your cast iron impeller off without busting it....

It's hardly worth the trouble when new alloy ones are $35 and pump more water.

I've seen my old boss rebuild water pumps for old cars before, never for minis though as they are easily acquired.


I'm not entirely sure if what i'm about to say is correct as i was never involved in doing any of it.

I think he would get the seals etc from a pool shop as the water pumps for pools use the same sort of stuff. Then he would machine the shaft to suit and then whack it all back together.


Maybe something to look into if your keen?

The problem is once the seal goes, the water usually goes through the bearings and stuffs them. These are integral with the shaft and not separately replaceble on modern engine water pumps, unlike pool pumps.

I rebuild original cast iron A series water pumps for anoraks who want original. I fit a ceramic unit seal (this seal does not bear on the impellor) and slightly enlarge the waterways. New shafts/bearings are available from bearing outfits. They are not at all difficult to rebuild but I agree that a modern alloy pump is really a better thing so far as pumping water is concerned.

I take it you would need a 10 tonne press (at least) to remove the shaft.

I tried a BFH once, but gave up in disgust.
