I received my new Smiths/ caerbont automotive tachometer today and i am having problems wiring it up to my electronic ignition.

Can someone tell me what i am doing wrong?

Pin 1: I am not sure what this does
Pin 2: i will hook it up to my lighting loom
Pin 3 i am connecting to the + of the coil
pin 4: i replaced ping 3 with this
pin 5: done that
pin 6: i connected it straight to my fuse box which comes off the alternator.

The little switches on the back have been set up to a 4cyl.

I have tried it and all the needle does is bounce around staying under 1000rpm and after 10 seconds just shuts off...

So what goes where?

The tach pin 3 (or 4) needs to be connected to the same side of the coil as the distributor, which from memory is the '-' side. The '+' side of the coil should be fed from your ignition switch.

Likewise the +12V power (pin 6) should also be connected via the ignition switch, so that the power to the tach is cut when the ignition is turned off. Otherwise it's constantly powered.

Do you know where the mechanical oil temperature gauge plugs into on a mini?

On the front of the block, at the opposite end to the temp sensor.

The one Ryan is referring to is the oil pressure. You probably could get a reading from there but If you want a true reading you need to go to the sump.

There is an adapter that goes into the sump plug that can read oil temp.

I will also need to get a gauge pod and drill more holes.
I have put it up in the for sale section.
