Just a quick question.

Which are more suited to a 998, 1 1/8" or 1 1/4" twin carbs?

1 1/4"

1 1/8" were too small for anything

Ok. So 1-1/4" are the biggest most suited to a 998cc?

I'd use twin 1-1/4" on it, unless it's a racer...

I had twin HS2s on my 1st 850 with a Waggott 23/60 cam and a worked head, and it was a wee rocket :P
... for a while- then the 850 crank broke.

1-1/4" for sure. I too had a 948 Mk1 Sprite with 1-1/8" standard and it could have used 1-1/4" SUs. The Sports 850 developed in Australia used twin 1-1/4" SUs - I doubt the smaller option was considered.
