Any one figured out what broke..

I'm not sure anything broke but they had trouble with crankcase ventilation and had to redesign it. Or so I have been told ??

223kms for mini and an unofficial land speed record doesnt seem very quick to me.

Im sure i remember seeing footage of a J car hit 200km's. And wouldnt have had a super charger or twin cam head.

you've gotta put it in perspective - yes, GR's Nb car hits ~203kph at Eastern creek, at somewhere around 8300rpm - and it's flat out, can't go any faster, and if he tried to maintain that sort of revs and load for any amount of time (the main straight at eastern creek only lasts 20 seconds or so), the engine would fail very very quickly

Now, think about your own car, if it's flat out at (say) 160kph, and you wanted to push it up to 180kph, what sort of modifications would you need to do? now push it up another 20kph, and then another 20kph. But what you've gotta remember is that every little bit faster you go, the air gets harder and harder to push through. Maybe that first 20kph takes another 15hp, then the next 20 takes another 30hp - and you've only just broken the 200kph mark... that extra 20 is probably another 50hp

The aerodynamic forces on a mini are huge - and that car still has it's body seams

and then make it survive repeat runs over a long distance at the utter utter limit of it's power

what those guys are doing is absolutely astonishing

Not to mention the whole 1000cc limit thing.....

pretty amazing for a A series "1000cc" ?? mini even if it is slightly modified with afew add ons.

It pro'lly doesn't mean much but the car is being promoted as a "970" Cooper S so it possibly uses an s crank etc.

yep, a 970 Cooper S crank :D

I'm sure they well and truly comply with the under 1000cc regulation - they'd be nuts to try and bend the rules - but the 970 crank is probably the best one to take therevs required and the amount of boost they'd be putting through it

Got this last report from them this morning.

Al

Well it been a busy few days since our last update. Sorry for letting it drift. You may have heard the news already but things have gone well.

I just checked back and it looks like when we last sent an email we had just qualified for a record run. The next day we were on the Salt before dawn and had about 45 minutes to prep the car. All the cars in impound were then towed to the start lines and began their gave it a good go.

On our qualifying run we recorded 142.103mph on mile two. Our record run we recorded 151.087mph to give us an average of 146.6mph. A new record. Needless to say we were stoked, especially so when Nelson said the car was still accelerating at the end of mile 2. All that remained was the formality of a post record tech inspection.

The car was in good shape so we lined up again. This time the thinking was to run to the end of mile 3, giving more time to get to the car's potential top speed. It worked, with the timing ticket showing 156.045mph! As far as we know, thats the fastest speed ever recorded for a classic Mini.

The Cooper went straight back to its parking spot in the impound and after checking the car over we went back to the campsite, again pretty stoked.

The next day was Friday, last chance for record runs. We were there before dawn again and did our prep but soon discovered another wee gremlin that we weren't able to fix in time to do the run. We were disappointed of course but we were still going home with a record, plus we still have the timing ticket that shows we broke 150mph, a crazy speed for a vehicle designed to be a space and fuel efficient city car. Given an extra hour or two we might have had a record over 150mph. Thats not up to us though, thats up to the gods of speed.

So, what next? Firstly we're all heading home, some towing the Cooper to a container in LA, some taking the long way and taking in the sights, others flying out of Salt Lake City today.

We'll be getting together all the images, deleting all the rubbish ones and putting them up somewhere for everyone to see, plus we've got enough footage to make up a wee film of the whole experience. If theres enough interest, we might put together a book. Let us know what you'd like to see.

Finally we'd like to say thanks to all of our amazing sponsors, crew, 150 Club members and supporters, including the 1400 plus supporters who joined us on Facebook.

Didn't MiniMania USA have the old Mini speed record with a S/C one? Anybody got a link to the records?

Hi smac,

NZ$100K is quite a modest budget when building and running something like this car and I am sure there are many who have far exceeded that and got nowhere near setting a record. In fact, I think they have achieved brilliant results on quite a limited budget and they deserve nothing but praise, admiration and respect.

Regards

Al
