put new clutch in yesterday (plate, diaphram spring). it had bad judder before but could get it into gear ok. now it does not wor and i can't get it into gear. it seems that there is not enough pressure to push the release bearing hard enough against the spring housing. i have bled the slave cylinder. do you think it could be the new spring - should i put the old one back in ?. What could i have done wrong putting all the parts back together? please help

just had a thought do u think I need a new slave cylinder to operate the new clutch, i dont want to have to take the flywheel off again if i can help it but might have to if it is something else

IF you have bled your slave cylinder you have probably let air into it. Bleed it by getting some fuel line hose long enough to go from the bleeder on the slave clynder back into the master cylinder. Then start pumping, then when you think thats enough, keep pumping. Trust me for such a small run the pipe seems to hold alot of air. Anyway keep doing this and your pedal should come good.

There's a metal circlip like thing that's inside the slave, it was catching on the arm i think and stopping clutch travel, Ripped it out and it was alllll good mate

Aaron [me] is with aaron on thsi one. I had a similar problem and found it was cos of all the air in the little slave cylinder...bleed it good and troubles should be alleviated!!

When you fit a new clutch plate, the backplate (and the diaphragm) are further in than they were before. So the stop nuts on the end have to be screwed out a bit- also as the clutch arm comes out further to actuate it, with a bit of wear in all the pivot pins and the clutch arm, as Josh says the slave piston can hit the circlip.
Pedal should go all the way to floor- if not, this is the problem.
Best way to fix is replace all the worn pins and/or clutch arm, but many people remove the circlip, or lengthen the push rod, or bend the arm, to compensate.

I had it after rebuilding the engine + changing the plate. Bled it and bled it and still no gear. The doc came to the rescue - if the master cyl is old the gaskets get - when its used everyday they get enough workout and don't leak but if left standing for a long period - they start leaking
(remind anyone of a Seinfeld episode "George you gotta exercise the gaskets in the toilet"?)

yes the pedal goes all the way to the floor but no pressure at all even though it moves the slave push rod a tiny bit. the piston in the slave will only move half way up it's cylinder so it is no where near enough ton push the arm as far as I think it needs to go.
How far after hitting the diaphram does it need to be pushed. going to get a new slave cylinder tommorow - do you think this is a good idea - ThANKS EVERYONE. I will display my ausmini.com stickers with pride

news on my clutch is as follows:
got heaps of pressure from the slave cylinder now. BUT still will not go into gear - I can hear the thrust bearing pushing hard against the diaphram. what have I done wrong when putting the new clutch plate in ? do you think it is the driving straps are not pushing , any ideas please - getting desperate now

i had this same problem i hac no clutch when i did mine,
cant rememer what i did to fix it but i had to take it all off again

Hope I didn't but I think I will take it all apart to check. Is there a way to check the operation of the clutch while it is apart cos it is a pain to put it all back together then find it doesn't work ?

Can you measure the actual travel of the push rod out of the slave cylinder?

Might sound stupid, but has the throwout adjustment bolt been set correctly?
I can quickly check it by seeing how far the pedal moves before it takes up any pressure on the springplate. If you hang out the door and look under the bonnet while you do this you can get a good idea of what it's doing by watching the throwout arm move.

If it has to push too far simply to get the bearing to the spring plate, then there won't be enough travel left to fully dis-engage the clutch.
Hope I'm not asking you to suck any eggs, apologies otherwise.
