The more stuff I turn on, the lower the revs drop.
Thought this was just limited to the extra dash lights I wired in, does it on headlights alone now.

Can I just rev it up if I'm stopped?
This solves the problems.

Will I stuff the alternator?
It's a brand new direct replacement for the standard 17?? I think.

It's just the alternator doing its job. The more juice you ask it to give, the more HP it takes to drive it.
You need more cubic inches like mine maaate, then it won't do it.

So what your saying here is upgrade the engine, not the alternator...

I like your style Kev!

Yes Kevin is correct. The bigger the Alternator output is the more horses you need to drive it. Your engine must be pretty weak or idling too low though to make it so noticeable when you turn things on . One other way of getting around this is by fitting a smaller diameter Pulley on the Alternator but then again what Revs do you rev your engine to? You don't want to over spin the thing. Original Mini Alternators have a pretty small pulley usually about 2 1/2 to 3 inches in Diameter.

Yeah it was sitting at 1100 RPM and almost stalling when lights came on. I figured I could just turn up the idle but didn't know if I was just masking an underlying problem.
'Lillee' took it for a drive last night and we upped the idle a bit for normal day time running which in turn has kept the rev drop alot less noticeable to about 1000 when the lights come on. Car is yet to catch fire or blow up!

I dunno, I am running an 80Amp Bosch alternator from a Pulsar and have always run this unit since the very weak (in comparison to Sam's car) 1100 and I've never had this problem?

The revs drop 300-500 when the lights come on. Considering he also has a stereo, amplifier, 10,000 guages but none of those things seem to matter, when the lights are turned on, instant and dramatic rev drop.

Could it be something else? Does a std clubby have a headlight relay wired in my default? is it a bad earth somewhere? Is the brand new 17 unit too tight?? I am adamant that if he bolted on my Bosch alternator, it wouldn't do this?

That's a pretty big drop. I thought my 998 was bad because it dropped by 80-100rpm. And that's with h4 headlights and h3 driving lights.

How modified is your engine? If you have a wild cam in there and a lopey idle, you'll need to idle it up even more to keep it happy.

What wattage are the headlights? These are typically the highest draw items you run constantly....

cheers,

I think you would be better off taking it to someone with a Multimeter who knows something about Mini Electrics and Alternator behaviour. You need to do some voltage tests at different points. It would be much better than guessing. Very difficult to actually find out what is happening without checking the actual vehicle.

Convertible Mini I think I will do just that for peace of mind and to get to the bottom of the problem. Cheers.
