I have the Smootharide kit fitted, although haven't done many k's in it since the rolling resto turned into a non-rolling 'fix everything else' resto. But the ride is much improved over 35 year old rubber donuts. The kit is easy to fit but needs engineering in NZ, hence the extended time off the road. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a more modern level of comfort. Whether you'd get the same ride with new standard donuts is probably up for debate, but it's great value and does what it says on the tin.

I think the kit weighed about 10kgs as it included 4 x rubber donuts, hilos, adjustable rear brackets. I also purchased 1.5 deg front suspension lower arms and adjustable front tie rods.
Check the website as sometimes they give weights when you proceed to checkout. or at least you could check the cost of freight and avoid the hassle of trying to claim VAT back at the airport

I'd be keen to hear from anyone who has driven the same car on both smootha ride and coil springs (not coil overs)....if such a creature existed.

That would be interesting. Phil Deane in Upper Hutt said they'd had great results (smooth ride) from springs but I'm not sure if he meant coilovers or coils. I'm hopefully stopping by to see him tomorrow so I'll ask.

One thing that does annoy me in NZ are the sets of Hi-los for sale in NZ, without any mention that they need certifying here. I for one didn't realise and it lead to a metro disk upgrade (no bad thing) and a complete restoration while I was at it (again, no bad thing). But it irks me that someone else will buy them and get pinged for something relatively innocuous.

Yeah you look at any of the suspension gear for sale, nowhere do they ever mention it. If asked, half of them will say "not sure" when they know damn well it does.

The flip side of course is that your average WOF inspector doesn't have a clue and will just pass a lot of modifications. Hell I know someone with a honda caliper conversion who gets passed at VTNZ every time.....
