Hi all, first time post on here although have been reading for quite some time. I'm slowly putting together my 1970 mini k after painting and I was wondering what sealant goes between the rear windows hinge and the body? They had a black mastic type substance under them when removed, which I assume was from factory. Would sikaflex do the job here?Any advice/input would be much appreciated.

I would not use Sikoflex , it is a glue
when I put mine together I used black windscreen sealant
more a waterproof gap sealer than glue

Although many years ago I did manage to find a similar rubbery substance for when I restored my Cooper S

Sikaflex is the manufacturer/brand . They make heaps of different types of glues and sealants.
They do make a windscreen sealant. Basicly it looks the same as the normal urethane sealant, but it doesnt completely set.

I think the original stuff was a butain rubber stuff (don't know if I spelt that right) When I put mine together , no one knew what I was talking about .
wind screen sealant sets but does not go hard , not untill 40 years

The original sealant doesn't appear to have set, that's why I thought another mastic sealant (like sikaflex windscreen sealant) would be suitable.

Sounds like the sikaflex windsreen sealant is the sfuff you need

Original sealant is a butyl mastic, it is available from Supercrap and all the other suspects.
You can get it in grey or black. Brand unimportant, it's all the same.
Sikaflex 291 etc is a gap sealant but it sets, IMO it's not what you want to seal window glass into a rubber. These types are more used to bond glass onto the body on late model cars.

I thought windscreen sealant was just black silicone.

Thats what it has always appeared to me to be when I have used them.

Has anyone had an issue with the black sealer used on the window rubbers turning the chrome filler strip brown?

I had a front and rear screen put in by a professional installer who insisted on using the black sealer under the rubber. Two weeks later the filler strip was a brown colour.

Thought it might have sun damage but another local mini person had had the same thing done recently and his has just turned brownish as well?????

There shouldn't really be any sealant in the channel where the chrome locking strip goes. However most rubber contains plasticiser which can migrate into other plastics and discolour them, it might just be coming from the seal itself. Its a very common problem with car tyres on garage floor coatings.

Maybe it's just me...but I've never used any kind of sealant either between glass and rubber, or rubber and body, and I've never had a leak. Our current car has some kinda black crap in the front screen, and it runs down the dash rail on a hot day

The 'chrome' filler strip always seems to turn brown eventually so I've just used the black version which I prefer anyway.
