Just got the two engines down from my son's

12YD/Ta/H/7336 ---1100 or 1275??

and the Auto .. 12H169/H*******(unreadable) 1275 or 998?

Pretty sure anything with 12H is a 1275. I can't find exactly what they are on this list (my usual resource for this type of stuff, other than Ausmini) But I profess to be the leading expert on NOT knowing this stuff :lol:

12YD/Ta/H7336 is an 1100S manual, that one has small journal crank & rods.

12H/169/H is an early 1100S automatic. I have one here I've just converted for manual trans.

What is the 1100S Trick then?

BMC in their infinite wisdom(!) back in the 60s decided to call a Morris 1100 (with a 1275 motor) an 1100S. It may have made sense in the 1275 Cooper S's heyday, but since then many people not in the know just assume an 1100S is 1100cc.
They should have called it a Morris 1300, as they eventually did (with the 1300 automatic) when the Morris 1500 arrived.

Used to go to the wreckers and say 'how much is that engine in the Morris 1100?' I was getting them for between $100 and $150, back in 1985.
