My problem is that the idiot with the Loctite and rattle guns installed a 42" cable... It's too long. I need a shorter cable, and everyone tells me there's no reliable way to shorten the existing outer. :( Hence the frustration...

I've got a TomTom mounted. ;) I did have the smart phone sitting in the dash, but it knocked loose the alternator charge light, which made me think I had a dead alternator... And I've got a freshly calibrated speedo and angle drive sitting here, along with an almost-complete new dashboard that I've spent hours crafting. 8) But that's Murphy's law, hey? :D

Just a thought thinking outside the box - if the old one is stuffed - stuff it some more If you can get to it with an extension drill bit drill a series of holes vertically down the knob gently without getting in the thread underneath the split it open with a long heavy duty blade screw driver and peel it off.

Can you get a socket on the 7/16 A/F nut, and use a bunch of adaptors & extensions up to a height where the ratchet will go on?
Then drag the cable and the top mounting plate out as a unit.

Wombat, I'd definitely consider it if I thought I could do it accurately...

Doc, I can get a socket on the 7/16 bolt, but I'm a little short of extensions to get a ratchet on there. Plus, it's not easy to get the socket on there with the required U/J - without the U/J, the sockets go off into the subframe at quite an angle. One of my early attempts was an adaptor screw driver, it showed me just how steep the angle is.

Well, it's permanent. Had 1018cc kindly drop round today, he can confirm that the 7/16" bolt is done up impossibly tightly, as is the nut on the speedo cable. It'll have to stay there until the engine next comes out, hopefully a long way into the future...
