Interesting to hear of the competition hydro fluid. A "mate" back in the 70's drove a Morris 1500 which was apparently refilled with comp. fluid to stiffen the ride. Would love to know how it differed from the normal stuff, - I assume higher viscosity.

Anybody out there know?

going by winabbey's post above - it has more "lubricity additive" in it... whatever that is - one would assume its a soluble oil of some description

It answers my question on squeaking suspension. Here I was thinking it was dry ball joints (arthritis  )

Much appreciated.

Mine still squeaked (the S, not my joints- they weren't old enough at the time) even though it seems it had the "improved" heavy duty fluid. One has to wonder how bad the squeaking was before the "improved" fluid. So does this mean that all later S cars were filled with heavy duty competition type fluid?

lack of grease and dry knuckles are often the cause - check it because you may have an actual problem that needs to be addressed before you have a catastrophic failure

I had a mate tell me from memory (who used to work for a Leyland dealer) who got a formula off one of the BMC chemists for the original fluid.

That the first hydro systems used a red fluid but the cars squeeked. So they changed it to the other stuff (the funny smelling stuff)

I will have to ask him about alternative fluid for rally or racing
