Definitely RoRo...in my case, because a $6,000 bill for container shipping a Mini (unless really special one) was nonsense.

Interestingly, the ocean shipping cost for an 11' long Mini or a 20' long container is the same. It is the port of origin and receiving port charges for container shipping (container loading/unloading, trucking container to/from port by bonded carrier, opening container at bonded wharehouse, bonded receiver completing/filing customs documents, etc.) that punch the costs skyward.

In 2011, shipping to Port Metro Vancouver had to be container...not in 2013. Therefore, shipping ROO home began to make sense given the very good condition of its original steel work.

Now approaching some 1,700 nautical miles covered since leaving Yokohama for Port Metro Vancouver...2,400 nautical miles to go!

RoRo means Roll on Roll off

My father worked on the Iron Monarch out of Port Kembla for years on one of these - you could drive a truck staight from the wharf into the back of it - heaps of room inside for covered safe storage - this was his ship - http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/201 ... 479302.htm

gret story reagrdless for Roo and all the best for it's new home in Canada, what mileage that thing has done eh?!

Question for Rick: did you have to leave a key onboard in case the freight needed to offloaded/reloaded unexpectedly? or fire etc

Yes, keys went with the Mini since it had to be delivered to the vessel, driven onto the ship and off/on with the transfer between RoRo vessels in Yokohama...and off again here in Vancouver in a few days now.

As previously mentioned we added Land Rover tie-down anchors at the 4 corners since we did not know what means of anchoring might be used or needed to be used on the vessel(s).

Hopefully it arrives with all its bits & pieces OK after 41 days at sea and in ports.

Well wouldn't you know, Curitiba (the RoRo vessel ROO is on) got diverted to the Port of Tacoma in Washington because she has vehicles for delivery there and there is a backlog of RoRo vessels in Port Metro Vancouver and anchored waiting to unload.

Likely won't see Curitiba in Port Metro Vancouver and offloading until Tuesday/Wednesday...maybe later.

At the end of the day, ROO will have visited ports in Australia, Japan, USA & Canada before rolling onto bitumen here.

The Curitiba headed into Canadian waters on the 12th, anchored in sheltered water briefly and 8 hours later was headed up the Fraser River to the Annacis Island RoRo facility in Port Metro Vancouver. Next day it was offloaded, whereupon I leapt into action to get ROO cleared from Customs.

One of the applications was for the mandatory Soil Exam, which precedes completion of the import docs. Thanks to the thorough power wash at Ken Nelson's in Ipswich, ROO got an instant release!

Yesterday morning January 17th, I climbed through the last of the hoops - was pitch black & 3 C when I headed the 40 kms. to the Customs office in Vancouver - paid duty & tax, got authorization to head for the Terminal, pay dock fees, and leave with ROO.

We headed for the Terminal with a trailer since you just never know after almost 8 weeks since drop-off in Brisbane. Sure enough there was a defective vehicle notice "discharged battery", but I put the key in the ignition and ROO fired right up with the little choke I had deliberately set in Brisbane.

Some air went in the front tires (we would be headed straight for a 50 mile freeway run), handed in the pink slip to security as we left, stopped to fill the fuel tank and off we went.

Arrived safely in Abbotsford, nothing fell off during the drive - will be Safety Inspection done on Monday/20th by a club member and certified mechanic in a shop that is Provincially licenced to inspect imports from the rest of the world and the Provincial Commercial Vehicle Safety & Enforcement inspector will sight line the Mini, examine all glass, take photos etc. I might have to put in some Halogen headlights for LHD vehicles.

Anyway, I expect to be driving ROO home licensed & insured Monday afternoon.

Good to hear he has arrived safely and mechanically sound.

Sounds like getting through Customs in Canada is a doddle compared with Oz.

Cheers,
Watto.

Hi Craig,

Several things aided the relatively instantaneous movement of ROO through the hoops.

1) I was shipping a vehicle I owned (registered owner in Queensland) to myself a resident citizen in Canada. It registered with the officials that I had delivered the vehicle to the ship broker in Brisbane and was picking it up in Vancouver. Title documentation went back almost 7 years and all was in order original Bill of Sale (when ROO was purchased by my cousin etc.) with original title documents from NSW & Qld., current registration, licensing, insurance.

2) Shipping was set up well in advance, and the Mini moved on a NON-NEGOTIABLE WAYBILL, which meant that there was no need for a Shipper's Release (after Customs & Soil Exam releases were in hand).

3) ROO was given a very thorough power washing by Ken Nelson in Ipswich, thus the SOIL EXAM was a mere formality (though the actual look at ROO could have taken a day or two more - they say 2-4 days to have the inspection made). I heard within 29 hours that ROO was clean.

4) Once the results of the SOIL EXAM were in hand I was away before dawn for Vancouver to complete the paper work, pay duty & tax and immediately phoned the Terminal to confirm that the Customs & Soil releases came through and the shipping agent (for K-Line) to confirm they had no more interest in ROO - shipping was paid for etc.

5) Early I recognized that both government, terminal and shipping agent personnel were not looking at a similar set of facts all that often. So, I made sure that I was solicitous of their understanding and asked useful questions in a non-threatening manner. In the end, they were all helping me get through the process...and I appreciated their help.

The Terminal contact was new on the job with used vehicles, so we walked through the process together by telephone & email.

6) Others in the Mini community here have not been so fortunate...for example, vehicles that failed the soil exam cost at least another $300 each to have them cleaned and 10 days delay before they could go to the next step.

7) The British Columbia safety inspection is done by approved shops and in my case I know the mechanic well. I will not even consider asking him to fudge anything. The British Columbia transport ministry inspection will focus mostly on the glass and lights - all 1973 original glass and Lucas headlights...we will see.

Some here are surprised at the apparent speed of the import process. My advice is for an importer to have a clear grasp of the process and to work co-operatively with government and industry officialdom. A little goodwill goes a very long way.
