Ryan , just remember these cars are upwards of 50 yrs old now , and noise reduction wasn't at the top of the list back then , you will struggle to get them anywhere near the modern comforts that we are all enjoying nowdays .

You can cut it down a fair bit with the likes of Dynamat and other products , but there's plenty of work in it .

Yeah, I understand that, but I have been in other minis that are a lot more pleasant to be in than mine.

I am adding a hotdog to the exhaust to try and help, but most of the noise is from the engine. I think I will add some dynamat to footwells and bulkheads.

I personally reckon the felt up under the rear parcel tray help a lot. There's not much between you and the boot, and a small gap between a resonating muffler and the boot floor.

i just soundproofed behind my clubman dash with dynamat extreme, 2 sheets got the whole dash done easily with maybe half a sheet left over. I payed $35 a sheet off ebay, made a big difference! Highly recommended. 8)

Dont forget a whole heap of noise comes through from behind the speedo, making a blanking plate to cover the hole and sealing it also has a great effect on engine noise reduction, I also agree with Mick, its surprising to see how much noise come from the boot area, there are large open areas at the base of the "C" pillars where foam was originally plus the holes in the parcel shelf also, plug these and cover them up for a big difference.

I used this product. Self adhesive backing, but the bonnet needs to be clean and it's worth taking off the bonnet to fit. http://www.minis.com.au/minis/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=350

Heres how the originals looked

Minis were a noisy car from birth, to make one quiet takes a lot of work, and when you have done all you can to make a mini quiet it will still be loud, although in trying to make your mini quiet you will have added a lot of weight, and will have destroyed the fun handling of the car.

This site is an interesting read for sound proofing. http://soundproofing.org/infopages/soundprf.htm Oops forgot the link
"If one were to make a mat of sound absorbing material rather thicker and use a metal barrier inside it, it would be very effective in really stopping engine noise coming through the firewall. So if ordinary kitchen Reynolds Aluminum Foil is sandwiched between the mats, (use contact cement), most of that noise will be prevented from entering the cabin. A 2″ minimum total thickness is recommended."

2" thick matting sounds a bit extreem.

I found the best we to reduce cabin noise was to wear ear muffs.

serously consider using something like dynamat, it has a awesome reputation for blocking unwanted noise doesnt cost much and isnt a heavy material

Gee a whole 1-2 kg is a huge amount of weight :D .

Did the bonnet and boot plus parcel shelf and tanks. The Clark rubber spin off of dynamat is just as effective at a quarter of the price. It is 1200 wide and in metre lengths...cost $40 for 2 rolls of it and have a complete roll left over plus some off cuts... :)

A lot of people put layer upon layer of dynamat in when they're doing a full audio install. Which is stupid, that's not what it's for. Dynamat is designed to stop the resonance of the panels - if you put a small sheet in the middle of your door skin, you will knock out most of the noise. After that, it's diminishing returns.

For best results, you would want dynamat (or equivalent) on all large panels, and then a noise barrier like a thick carpet underlay. 5 layers of dynamat will not be 5 times as effective as 1 layer.

Picked it up at the fishwick store in the ACT just before I moved back to queensland. Will get the receipt and see if I can get a picture of it for you. It has a self adhesive backing and is a metal film covering a lattice of pocket foam...approx 4mm thick. Works an absolute treat and does not come off if you clean the area to be covered thoroughly.
