What is your preferred position for side mirrors? (post a pic)

There seems to be some discussion about what is good and what is bad and since I am about to repaint my door and this provides the best time to move the mirror i thought it a good time to ask

Might be a silly question but does anyone know if you have to have a side mirror? (particularly in SA as that is my state)

Looking forward to different suggestions,

cheers,

CJ

I know on my '62 I don't have to have them but I think the rule for at least one came in the late 60's sometime.

You will most likely need a drivers side mirror at least.

passengers side didn't come in till much later... late 70s or early 80s

I have a clamp on style mirror on my quarter light frame, works well, I have no plans on changing it.

When I placed mine, I already had the crusty plastic clubby mirror, so I replaced it with a nicer chrome mirror, and put the same on the other side.

I just chose a position where it was the same on both sides, but still visible, and covers up the original holes. Only problem is that the new mirror is higher and doesn't stick out as much as the new one, and the corner windows can hit them.

The ADR for rear vision mirrors came in from 1st January 1972. If your car is a round nose in line with the photo in your avatar you don't need one by law.

See here - http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/ ... pdf/14.pdf

The accessory mirrors marketed by BMC in the 1960's and 70's were Wibroc brand. Some were fixed to the driver's door by screwing through the door skin, but Wibroc also made a mirror that clamped to the leading edge of the door so didn't require holes. It was one of the favourites used by NSW Police on their unmarked pursuit Cooper S's, and other BMC vehicles. They come up on eBay quite regularly. Perhaps the driver of the one on the trailer didn't use it, resulting in the ding in the front.

Thanks winabbey, mine is a 67 so i guess I could go sans mirrors but I think I will look into the other style you have shown that doesn't require holes in the body work if I put a mirror back on.

cheers,

CJ

Does your quarter light window still open though?

As mentioned before most important to get an assistant to hold the mirror while driver checks position.

yeah, it clamps on the "windup" side of the chrome upright.

No dramas with the main windup window, or the quarter light.

I got one very similar to the ones in the old advert from a Morris spares place in the UK. It is easy to clamp on the side of the qtr glass panel and doesn't impede opening at all. Best is its a wide angle too.

I've got the clip on ones. Cannot for the life of me remember where I got them from. Probably ebay or something.. This is the only photo I have of them close up. They just attach with a couple of little allen screws.

http://users.tpg.com.au/wasabipn/Mini/20130420_140557.jpg

They don't interfere with the quarter window or the wind up window. I was picky about getting these ones just because of that. I like to "big rig" around town with windows down and quarters open... I find them easy enough to see out of, but really they are just there for legality.

Cheers,
Keels.

I had a big ugly plastic one on mine when I got it... now I have a nice looking chrome bullet style one and a good view of the road (the holes were drilled in the wrong spot on the door). I have been thinking of getting another rubber grommet and removing it all together
