Pieces of crap!

I really worry about the crappy components that are parts of suspension and brakes.

Anyone out thee who is finding they are constantly having to adjust their clutch and replaced tha bearing carrier in the last couple of years .....this could be why.

:( Maybe the reason why I am having to keep adjusting my clutch and I can't get reverse gear?

Your bearing is already in the mail so you shouldn't have to wait too long.

And that carrier wear is is amazingly bad. Do you know how many miles you have put on it? Last question was it greased or dry?

Thanks Matt.

About 12,500 mls and yes it was greased.

These carriers are extremely soft. I had no trouble scratching my initials in one with a scriber.

Doc had no trouble drilling it out for the sleeve.

Exactly my symptoms, Clutch was fantastic when the bearing carrier was installed but would gradually get harder to get reverse and first. Would improve with each adjustment.

Michael B, I have a spare hardened sleeve here, but if yours looks like Phill's pic it is well past being fixed.
These current plungers are free machining steel, and soft as butter. But I can't drill out worn original ones as those are hard as buggery.

Thanks Kevin, if I get a chance in the week I will take the wok off and check why I am having difficulty with reverse? Although I can select reverse when the engine is cold?
I will also go back through my receipts and find out where I got my bearing carrier from?

You could probably just remove the clutch arm and either try to see down into the carrier or feel for a divet with a pointer/scriber. I could tell mine was bad a few months ago this way. I readjusted my clutch a few weeks before this happened, that was probably the last straw that caused the ball to finally snap as it jammed in the divet it had created.

So! I removed the clutch arm this evening and it looks OK, maybe no wear cause I had the new arm chrome plated

I am also trying to add photos from iPad , so not sure if this will work?
I then took a few photos of the inside of the bearing carrier
Image
Which also looks ok with virtually no wear. I also checked the inside by running a small screw driver up and down the inside where the ball would press against the carrier and could not feel any indentation
Image
So I think all is ok on the outside.
I have put it all back together and adjusted correctly so will now take for a test drive when the rain stops :)

Karcraft now has some stock of EN24T carriers, I picked one up today. They are more expensive ($40+).

I will Rockwell hardness test one next time I am at GR's, but for now I can say a file will `just' mark the surface near the cross hole. These definitely appear to be hardened, unlike the el cheapo (leadbrite) ones that people have been selling lately which as I said previously are dead soft.

OK the hardness numbers are now in...

As I said above, Kc's cheap ones were only HRC1-2.
Kc's new ones (EN24T) measured HRC23-24. I would have expected harder, I doubt it has been heat treated in any way.

An original BMC one GR has measured HRC50. Tested again today, same result.

One of my silver steel bushes (hardened then quenched in sump oil, not tempered) measured HRC61. Which is possibly a bit hard but once pressed in, it can't go anywhere.
