Heres how bad they sometimes stamped them, and because the cars were treated and painted afterward they got filled with primer and paint. Mine is so crooked the M and 0 don't show.

It's assumed it was a way of identifying what model the body would become, once the car was painted and assembly began it became less relevant.

In fact on later models they stamped in places that it would be deliberately hidden such as the bonnet rain gutter under a rubber seal or by placing the paint sticker over it.

Another Cooper S check is to look inside the boot up under the parcel shelf.

They glued carpet under felt there on the Cooper S as a sound deadener. Normally it is long gone but you can usually still see bits of old glue and under felt there still. They also added under felt on the floor of the boot and in the boot lid on the S.

You can see I'm going for quantity over quality.

Normally I'm looking at Cooper S numbers but in the last week I have been playing with Deluxes (and an 850) so I just got things bass ackwards.

Ok.. So I've had another close look and with the torch light shining across the surface of the shroud I can definitely see the M and part of a 0 underneath it.. Unfortunately I can't see anything in the way of numbers adjacent the letters.. Exactly the opposite to Phillb's stamp.

On a brighter note it definitely had the felt under the parcel shelf as I recall ripping it out before it was blasted.. Still has remnants there now.. In addition it has the fuel pump breather hole under the rear passenger side.. Taller brake cylinder however doesn't have a booster anymore.. 7.5 brakes etc etc

Feeling a little more confident its a Cooper now.... Just wish I could find out more about its history.. Oh well.. The old girl deserves to have a bit of mystery about her I suppose

Cheers for all the advice guys..

Good luck with the rebuild. When is it going to hit the road?

It's pretty much finished.. So probably another 5 years or so.. Lol ;)

Actually GR has the motor which will be the last major hurdle.. Otherwise it's mostly back together.. Just the final touches after I get her running again... Can't wait to drive it again! Thanks for the info mate.. Much appreciated
