In a recent article VW is dabbling with twin charging again. They did it on the 1.4 litre supercharged and turbo charged 118TSi engine but dropped it.

The new version will use an electric powered supercharger for low rev boost. To make enough power the electric system (like many hybrids) is 48 volts or more. It has it's own circuit and battery.

So it is possible to
Make real boost with electric driven sc but it isn't viable at higher revs or at 12 volts.
