I've tried a scraper or two with no luck, tried a razor blade in a handle, no good.
I've also just watched a video on the CRC Gasket Remover and that stuff looks hard-core so I'm going to duck down the shop and pick up some of that stuff and give it a go.

Wear gloves it melts skin pretty good!

Does this stuff work on the flywheel housing gasket, as after 20+ years these things are like removing concrete.. :x

You can only try! Like I said before spray it onto a clean rag first then wipe it on. You see it bubble away and after about five minutes the gasket is like soggy toilet paper. It is pretty hard core so be careful.

So is it acidic, or something else? If so might not be best on an alloy housing?

Not acidic, ( just went to their MSDS) safe on brass, aluminium etc... it is a solvent that attacks the gasket sealant( impregnated into gasket and i gather any sealant used) Contains methyl chloride, methanol, xylene and a butane type propellant....
I wonder if methanol by itself would soften? ( keep away from rubber etc) available cheaply in 20 litre drums and you could soak things like the clutch cover????)

Good news on the gasket, after using CRC gasket stripper the pesky baked on gasket has been removed. It is a good idea to wear gloves as it does burn the human skin :( I used it as per the instructions, used a blade scraper to scrape off the gasket, gave it a high pressure wash, a rub down with steel wool, another high pressure wash and a spray with WD40 until I paint the block.......and it has come up a treat.

"Do not use on painted areas or plastic parts"
