I'm also looking at a 5 speed g'box. I'm currently running a 4 speed with a 3.2 FD, I like the extra top end speed but it's noticeably slower off the mark.

I just have a road car (no racing at all) but do like to take for an enthusiastic drive every so often. Am I better off getting straight cut or helical for a 1310 A+ with twin 1 1/2" carbies and a GR RE83 camshaft

Straight cut gears will not be suitable for a road car, they make a lot of noise. Do you know the power and torque of your engine? try asking the seller/manufacture of the 5 speed gearbox if it's suitable.

I know you could get wide ratio gearsets in some of the Rover boxes, it allowed them to run a tall diff (2.76) and still have a reasonable 1st gear ratio.
Dunno if still available, I'm not up to speed on Rovers....

It's amazing what can be freighted around the world for the right price
Only 800GBP for the full engine and gearbox assembly. Already dyno tuned Ready to bolt in

Actually I'd be surprised if it didn't fit in the "approved" carry-on gauge. If indeed it was ever tested.... maybe need to remove the diff and pack it at one end of the bag.

Would depend more on whether security decided it was a dangerous weapon.....

I made it through with a full RC40.

Cheers Ian

Just curious if someone by chance has found a modern 5 speed gearbox internals from some vehicle that can be modified to fit in an A series box. Similar to how someone worked out that a BMW bike head can be modified to fit an A series.

I remember David Rosenthal was an advocate for this modification. He's pulled back from the Web in a big way, but used to be a regular here with many amazing ideas and even more amazing workmanship. My Cooper 998 engine has a really nice set of CBR900 SS valves spun down to suit which was made by him, lovely work.

He had a project on the go where he was installing again a CBR900 series 6 speed gear set and mechanical linkages. I am unsure how that was working out however before he left. Maybe others might know a little more?

Yes, it is a shame he was driven away by people with less knowlage than himself, because of narrow minded idiots that should stick to serving chips at McDonalds rather than trying to tell a very qualified engineer how to do his job. I have seen the 6 speed gearbox David made, it was a work of art. It went into the scrap bin along with all the rest of the minis and parts.
