Ok, so I'm running out of ideas. I've tried all the ideas suggested. The coil seems fine. The leads seem fine. There is no arcing or spark jumping that I can see. I put some metho in the fuel tanks in case there was water in there, but that didn't help. I checked all the spark plugs and they seem fine, they were replaced very recently.

It seems weird to me because the idle is smooth, it only has issues under load.

Any other thoughts? Thanks for the help fellas.

Well any dizzy without points is `electronic ignition'. It uses an electronic module, to replace the points and condenser.

Nowadays, replacement points and condensers are imported rubbish. Better to fit a module in and toss the points etc for reliability.
Here's the one I'm using-

Well, just bit the bullet and got the NRMA out (only my pride prevented me from doing this sooner). He reckons it's definitely fuel because it's not backfiring, just missing.

So now to drain the tanks and start afresh. Interestingly, he recommended I use 95 as he said it burns better, 98 has diesel in it he reckons. I've always heard that 98 is better, especially with compression a bit higher (mine's about 10:1). Thoughts?

I reckon you just got a dud load of fuel, like I did.
You only have the servo's word on what is in their tank.

If your C/R is over 9.5:1 I'd forget 95.
Mine pinged on 95 when it was only 10.5:1.

95 has a poorer rep in the market than 98.
Most 98 is good stuff. I rate it BP>Mobil/7Eleven>United>Shell, going Good >Bad.

So I drained the tanks and put in fresh fuel, still no joy. Looks like I'm off to the mechanic. It's possible there is still some junk in the bottom of the tanks as I couldn't get them completely empty. This sucks!

Try giving your fuel lines a blow out and then buy a couple of new fuel filters and fit one , not sure what carbie's your running , i'd check fuel bowls and needle & seats as well .

As for the 98 fuel & diesel story , i've never heard of that , I'm like Doc ,i only run 98 in my car , used to run 95 years ago and it didn't like it .

So...did you change the fuel filter? and was there any floaty bits in it?

The other thing, just may be a fuel pump or fuel tank breathers/vents...

have you changed anything on the car since it was at Greigs?

Thanks guys. I did replace the fuel filter. Nothing obvious there, but it's not the clear type. I was concerned that it might be the fuel pump. Darby should be all good as Greig set that all up sweet. I haven't touched anything there since.

Cheers fellas

Worst thing you can do is assume!

"but it was running OK when Greig fixed it!"

Who knows what has happened since that day...

Check the fuel pump wiring and crack open the fuel filter to see what's inside...

Just in case anyone was wondering...

I picked up the mini from the mechanic yesterday. He'd pulled the carby off and given it a clean out, he reckoned the jet was a bit blocked or something. He thought maybe because of the angle, some water had gotten in there during that massive storm last week. Must've run in down through the air filter (k&n cone filter on hif44) or something. Has anyone heard of this happening before?

Anyway, it's running better now. Still doesn't seem quite as good as it was after Greig gave it back. At least I got a month of it running well... I'm a bit over this car. If I could get a decent price for it, I reckon I'd probably be just about ready to get rid of it and move on with my life!

Thanks again for the help team.

Yes! we were wondering! :D

Water splashing up under the bonnet is more likely when driving rather than just sitting there...but if your K&Ns were wetted with oil (are they that type) that should have repelled most of it.

Sounds like you may have got a bad dose of fuel if just a simple clean of the carby made it run...beware of more trouble then if the tank and lines haven't been drained...

As for being over Mini's...well, they are not for everyone because they do need a little maintenance unless you plonk in something Japanese under the bonnet (maybe)...generally though, they are reliable once sorted 8)

Yeah, mine has been pretty reliable. I think I'm just grumpy because I want to be able to make improvements, but we've got no money at the moment and what little I do get to spend usually goes on maintenance. I'll get over myself soon.

Hah! I feel your pain...but go do something else like dig up the garden, that tires you out and stops you thinking about no money for Mini's etc
