Line boring the remote housing and fitting bronze bushes will fix it. Leigh Engineering here in Melbourne has the tools/jig to do it.
I would like to know more about this mod/repair. I've heard of it a few times, but not seen the results.
What does it cost to have the work done?
Often this is not the problem, they can rattle even if not worn in the body.
997 Coopers had no spring above the split bush, only an O-ring from memory. Pinch a spring and cover off a Deluxe or K and fit that instead, you can't see it in the car.
On the last 3 or 4 rattly Deluxes and S's I saw, the problem was just the split bush worn. Once it touches the top of the housing there is no preload to hold the gearstick firm.
New split ring fixed them all. If I can't buy em I machine one out of nylon or HDPE plastic.
