Hi all,

I'm reconditioning the rear hubs and there's an item in the Timken roller bearing that I am not sure about.

See below pic - there are the two roller bearings and races, the dust seal, a split pin. But there is also a slim round rubber seal. I'm not sure how it fits in the hub. Any directions would be greatly appreciated please!

It's an O-ring, I believe it goes onto the shaft first, before the bearings do.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I'm not sure I catch your drift.

I have installed the bearing races and bearings into the hub assembly. Then this complete hub needs to be mounted onto the stub axle.

So the bearings don't really go onto a shaft as such when they are first installed. Do you mean I need to put the o-ring onto the stub axle before I mount the hub and torque it up with the castle nut?

I'm sure you're right, I'm just checking to make sure I understand it correctly.

Thats how I read the Docs responce. O ring on the stub first, then hub assembly.

Yes that ^^^ is correct.
Hint:
If the roller bearings bind a bit when torqued up, back the nut off to the next pin hole. Otherwise you will `brinell' the bearings.

The rear bearing setup is similar to the front wheel hub on say a Holden, there is no operational reason why it has to be `torqued up' like Mini front hubs do, [edit] when tapered roller bearings are fitted].
There is no drive torque transmitted through it.

Thanks Doc for confirming that. And also for confirming what I'd read; that these don't need the old torque like the original ones, so I'll tighten these like other cars I've had as you described.

This forum is a great resource for me doing my rebuild.
