Designed for the passenger side ...and it would definitely need to be convex there and if it weren't too convex would be ideal for the drivers side.

I have a pair of those GAM107 & GAM108 mirrors. They came with the black plastic angled spacers or flat gasket bases.

Then I read the Doc saying the plastic melts and the mirror falls off and you should option them up with the chrome bases instead.

So... In today's MiniSpares UK delivery was a pair of chrome spacers. BUT, they are a different base angle and they still have a plastic inside them so maybe that will melt anyway??

Here are some pics of the parts:

Maybe I ordered the wrong chrome bases but they are no good as the mirror will be angled in more when really in use and with the chrome base it will clash with the glass.

Just curious whether people aim their side mirrors into the blind spot so that there is always a view of cars as they move from behind to beside without having to move your head, or do you follow the guide books that say you need to see half the lane behind you with each side mirror (assuming two fitted) which means the forward part of your blind spot is not covered?

I only ask because my experience is that properly covering the blind spots with side mirrors and relying on your rear mirror view to see the lane behind you is the better way, in which case i have never had a problem with bullet mirrors.

Oh, i also readjust my side mirrors to show half the lane behind me each side if i am towing something that obscures the rear view - like a mini on a trailer. Unlike that dipsh!t i saw going up the Hume freeway with the boat on the back that changed lanes into me forcing me to brake hard to not hit his stupid farking boat - knobhead should have had mirror extensions like caravanners use because there is NO way that he couls see anything behind him.

This mini of mine is 47 years old and has never had any extra holes put in for mirrors, flares, radio antenna or anything else.

Last thing I would do to it is drill more.

Just my thoughts.

Nope, the bit of plastic that's mounted to the chrome base is fine. It's pretty rigid. Unlike the standard rubbish plastic mount that can't stand Aussie heat and sun. It doesn't melt, it just warps then the screw won't hold the mirror to it.

I tried these too, the actual mirror is fine but the plastic mount is rubbish. I fitted mine and came out next morning to find one lying on the workshop floor. The plastic was so crappy you could pick it away with you finger nail. I have these ATM, still on there, haven't fell off yet.

It's a high price to pay to have good vision out the side mirror... It was the first thing to go when I got the car though!

I've got bullets on both sides. You can definitely get convex glass - on either side. I've got it on the passenger side, with flat glass on the driver's side. I use both mirrors consistently. I have positioned them so that I can open the quarter glass to about 120º, I set up the passenger side (with double sided tape, inside, out of the heat, with an assistant), created a template, then checked that for the driver's side, then installed both in a matching location. So, they're symmetrical, and functional. I've also got the chrome bases - with the plastic bases, they'd sit a little lower, and clash a little less with the quarter glass, but obviously there's the bad experiences others have had. And I wasn't keen to replicate those bad experiences.

I'm not going to argue that there are heaps of cars out there with badly positioned bullets, bullets that do nothing more than look good (some might even question that!), but my experience is that with good planning and prep, you can absolutely get a good result from bullet mirrors.

Mokesta - I've got wind ups, so you might be happy with the mirrors that tight to the glass, but I located mine a little higher on the door. Above the fold in the door, on the more vertical section, similar to Timmy in the post above. It pushes the mirrors wider off the door - handy with those chrome bases.

Good enough to use to win 66 Bathurst. Note that it is back along the door, close to the driver, is angled up slightly and has a nice long arm.
