Hi I thought my rod change box was stuffed because it would only select 3 and 4 gear and reverse.
I was in the car tonight and I held the shifter hard upwards when changing it in the carport and it selected 1 and 2.
my question is there any way to keep the shifter held upwards?
Is there meant to be a plastic bucket in the bottom of the selector where the shifter plugs into?
Is there something else I am missing?

thanks Ralph.

Check the bottom plate isn't fitted backwards.
Sounds like the reverse gate block is sitting in the place of the 1-2 gate... !

Item 12 is the plate that goes on the bottom of the gear shift box, and it has a fence welded on it so as to lock reverse unless the gear lever is lifted over the fence. If the plate is fitted back to front, then 1st and 2nd wont be able to be selected unless the stick is lifted. Maybe this is worth a look.

I wish there was a thanks button you guys are great!
Will definitely check plate tonight.
Last night I was getting first and second by lifting the gear shifter.
Thanks again mini experts.

Also check that the rubber "cotton reel" mounts that hold the rod change assembly haven't been snapped.
Leaking engine oil stuffs them fairly quickly.

More importanly, if you can select reverse without lifting the shifter, then you will potentially destroy the box and engine by selecting reverse instead of a forward gear at speed.
