Round nose mini, firewall body number 3047, no idea of year. anyone?

I have replaced all hard lines, hoses, wheel cylinders, fitted a disc brake kit etc. Rebuilt rear subframe and suspension, new bearings, knuckles, made up urethane suspension rubbers etc. you get the picture.

Not totally happy with the bleeding (suspect there is air in the brake pressure limit valve - but haven't thought of a way of getting the air out yet, any ideas?), but pedal doesn't go all the way to the floor and car now stops 300% better.

Now my questions are:
- Is there any retaining spring for the rear shoes (like the front drum brakes have that little hooky spring thingy that clips into the wheel cylinder piston)? - there is an occasional high pitch noise and associated burning smell. I am wondering if I have left something out, and the only thing I can think of is the rear brake shoe falling sideways and rubbing on the drum.

- Are the rear shoes different widths to the front? I have pulled apart 4 front and 3 rear subframe/suspension units to find enough non stuffed bits and have noticed I have different widths brake shoes (no idea what came from where).

- the rear wheels stick out further than the flares, it currently has the spacer drums fitted, am planning to try non spacer drums, but worried tyres may rub on shocks. Tyres are 165/70R10, rims are minilite look alikes, not sure on offset. Are front and rear drums the same? If not how do I tell which is which?

-The disc brakes have moved the front track out a lot, so much that the front wheels are now out past the flares as well. How can I fix this? New rims? If so what offset do I need? Front previously had non spacer drums.

thanks,
Frank

Hi Frank,

I will comment on the stuff I know for sure - I honestly can't remember about the retaining clips for the rear drums as it has been ages since I've done rear shoes and I can't be bothered looking in the manual. Rear shoes ARE a different width to front shoes. I can't remember the measurements but the thinner ones go in the rear (it might be 1" for the rear and 1 1/4" for the front?).

I think you'll find that 165 wide tyres on 10x5 minilights will rub the trailing arm if you remove the spacer drum. The drums themselves are all the same - just make sure they are the correct size for the shoes that you are running i.e. standard or 1/16" over etc.

What kind of flares do you have? I have cooper s discs on the front of my roundnose and Mk2 S flares cover them fine. No additional spacers or anything?

All rear shoes are 1-1/4", fronts (twin leading shoe) are 1-1/2" wide.
There are 2 return springs between the rear shoes, that is all.
The lower one is offset, the wire goes to the bottom. If upside down it rubs on the hub.

How often do you deglaze and clean the dust from your drums?

pulled all the wheels off again.

one rear brake spring was upside down, so swapped that, it wasn't rubbing as none of my fresh paint had marks on the rear hub.

can't find the source of the high pitch squeak/squeal, usually of very short duration, although on the section of road near us they are resurfacing it is almost continuous when driving on this bit of road. applying the brake whilst driving does not affect the noise at all. so it's not the brakes.

I'm wondering if it is the suspension rubbers on the front.
Apart from the donuts I have put all new rubbers in the front; ie. tie bar & lower arm pivot.
can't make it squeak by bouncing the car up and down.

Any ideas?

Anyone in Perth here willing to take it for a drive for me and give me their opinion?

thanks,
Frank

Turns out the squealing was the front wheels; the alignment was way out, toe in. The disc brake hubs must put the steering arms in a different place.
Have adjusted it roughly right and it drives like a mini now. Will take it to Bob Jane and get them to align it correctly.

Unfortunately ruined the two front tyres in the little driving it did with the squealing, outside edges are now bald :(

But before we get new tyres, I need to source some rims that will put the tyres under the flares again.

Anyone got some suggestions for rims?
What offset value am I looking for?

thanks
Frank
