Hi all,

My mini has developed an intermittent starting issue that I can't seem to locate the cause of. It all goes well with the key in the "ON" position. But when I turn it to the "START" position it will either start as it should or nothing happens, the engine doesn't even turn over. If it doesn't start with the key it will still start with the starter button in the engine bay. Can anyone help?

Cheers

Simo

It may be that your ignition key barrel is playing up, there's electrical contacts inside which can wear out. It can also sometimes be the solenoid itself. Either are not uncommon.
Test the white/red wire on the solenoid with a multimeter or test lamp to see if it is getting 12 volts every time you switch the key to start.

I should also mention that the ignition barrel is new and only been in the car for a month or two.

It may not discount the barrel, with everything coming out of china...

You will need to prove the switch hasn't an intermittent fault , but also check your connections are secure and the solenoid coil as well.
