Yes, sorry I wasn't clear when I suggested the repro plate. It's not essential as Morris 1100 has repeated. Just suggested as I agree with you that a plate looks nice in the engine bay

I have found where I can buy a new blank Id plate from to stamp, the issue now will be finding out what the engine number and colour was that was stamped to the original plate that I am missing as to try and keep my plate looking Authentic, It is tempting to stamp it with the colour i am going to paint the car and with the engine number I am going to be putting in the car. . . . .

Small update,

Ive searched the number 11537 through every database I can find, called TMR queensland and its never been registerd in queensland unless its a horse float (which i am pretty sure it isnt!) the only way they will register it for me is if I have proof of previous registration, or proof from BMC that it was legaly imported into the country. . .
thats straight from a one hour phone call to queensland transport -_- GRRRR!!!

so here is hoping there is another number stamped on the body somewhere that I havent found becuase its caked in so much paint or something, that will yeild better results. . otherwise Ill have to cut this thing up and use its pannels to repair my other mini instead!

EDIT: jsut had a thought. . . I have two 998 engines. . . now mini deluxe's came with 998's correct? well i also have another mini deluxe (rusted to hell) but it has its plates on it. . i purchased it all from the same guy (who cant tell me anymore than he has and cannot find the plate) but my thought is, chances are the engines are from the two deluxes I have (as they were all purchased together. so if I match one of the engines to the plate in the rusty deluxe then maybe the remaining engine goes with the car that is missing the plate. . . would I have more luck getting the information I am after about the car if I was to post the engine number? (I will once I get home anyway, as I am sure people will want to add it all to there registers, can get photos of the Id paltes in my 850 and rusty delux if wanted also.

What other number do you expect to find? The number on the firewall is the car number. That is what the car should have been registered with.
They might have previously used the Deluxe Prefix of YMA2S2 and then the car number 11537.

There is no need to prove an Australian made car has been legally imported. Would they say such a stupid thing if it was a Holden?

Your engine number for that car should be within 50 or so from 9YA/Ta/H12037

I read elsewhere on this forum that a delux should also have a second number on the radiator shroud, is that mot correct?

On the shroud should be a body number and a code. The body number will be about 500 lower than the car number (and around 1000 lower than the engine number).
The code will be stamped...

The body number and the code will probably just confuse the registration people and is best left hidden. It serves very little purpose.

so I'm going to dig this up again. .

I've since received a blank ID plate to stamp (yes i know everyone tells me i don't need one, but i wanted one)

can anyone see any issues of me stamping this with the colour i want to paint the car and the engine number of the engine I am going to fit? will that just confuse QLD transport?

still need to battle the issue where they say they have no record of the car -_-

would the body number be prefixed with YMA2S2 ? making its body number 11537 registered previously as YMA2S211537?

I plan to power through the remaining work on the car very soon and then go for rego, the engine I am using was out of my previously registered 850 body, so they will have the engine number on record from that car. but not the body/chassis number of the new body.

If you have a spare plate from rusty body with engine you bought with this unknown car why not use that plate and engine for this unknown car????

Body numbers will not match but that can be done legally enough, and away you go

Just 11537.
The "VIN" is what was actually stamped into the body. On pre Apr 1969 it is numbers only. Post Apr 69 includes the YG letters at the front.
About the plate. I wouldn't stamp it. Just include it in the sale of the body as a blank. The more you try and restamp things the more questions are raised.

I think you miss understand, I am not trying to sell the blank plate or re stamped plate.
the blank plate is for my mini, i mentioned the selling one as a guy above said i shoudl take the plate from the other car and put it on this one and use the numbers on the plate (at least thats what i think he said) which i dont want to do.

I doubt ill ever sell this mini, ive become way to emotianaly attached to these little cars, and my beloved 'Sid' is jsut beyond repair, and this one 'Jasper' is essentially everything from 'Sid' except a new shell. and the majority of the attachment will stay. sid will stay with me forever, despite being beyond repair, he is destined to become part of my garden at the new house (im sure my neighbours will love that

I tried to get the YKG2S2 issued against my car in NSW because I didn't think a 4 digit number was good enough to show my car is a Cooper S. I also believe that there must be other early cars out there with the same 4 digits. But in NSW they said it has to be what is stamped into the cars bodywork.
I have just checked what VIN the following cars from QLD and VIC are registered with. Mixed results. Vic reg JRB166, SIO266, IDC111, MCS68 are numbers only. QLD reg PQR781 & COOPERS are numbers only but PIA987 & 00BMC Letters and numbers. So to answer the question of what VIN to use when going to register the car. flip a coin. It looks like QLD has used both styles. Sorry I could be of any real help.
