Hey guys

I have a rod change box with pot joints I'm looking to use for my van, i was told it may or may not have a lsd, is there any way to tell without having to strip it down?

Looking from the gearbox side i can see it has a standard looking crown wheel but thats about all..

Any help appreciated as i don't want to pull it apart unless i have too.

As far as im aware if it is a open diff when you turn a pot joint with it in gear the other pot joint will turn in the other direction with little resistance.
If it is a LSD there will be a bit of resistance when turning the pot joint.
It may depend on what type of LSD is in it as to how much resistance there is

If it has a standard open diff you can turn either output shaft freely and the opposite side will turn the other way.

If it turns the whole diff and crown wheel its either an LSD or broken?

LSDs are not suitable for standard road use....they are hard work at the steering wheel.

ok...

so i can freely do just about anything with the pot joints..

Hold one still turn the other in any direction ( works for both with a bit of resistance), turn both in opposite directions ( either way ), turn both in the same direction ( either way ).

The shifter isn't attached so I'm not sure if or how to put it into gear...

Ok, sorry to say but it sounds like an open centre.
You shouldnt be able to turn the pot joints opposite ways by hand easily.

Sounds like an open center, it doesn't need to be in gear to check the diff.

so is it worth fitting an LSD in an fast road car? its not a daily driver.. I assume its not going to be like driving my type r civic...

or save the money for something else..

If you want an LSD in a road car I'd fit a Quaife. Anything else is hard work to steer and/or won't last long.

i was looking at a jack knight cowl type but the more i read the more i was put off...

will look into the quaife..

I've bought the Quaife ATB upon reviews and recommendation as its meant to be unbreakable (lifetime warranty) and meant to have less torque steer than LSDs.

Sorry I won't be able to give you direct feedback for about 3 months as I'm still finishing off my build.

I have a quaife in mine, drives great on the road. Not cheap though, looking at 1000 bucks if you do it yourself.

If the engine makes enough power and,
If the car is driven in such a way that causes wheel spin.
Hard acceleration during cornering or from a standing start with a std diff will just make tyre smoke and understeer, not what you want in the bendy and windy sections of a mountain range.
