I picked up my first Mini today in Hobart. She is a 1978 leyland and I must say I've spent all day looking at it and driving it around the block as I have not registered her yet.

Looking forward to learning more about them and tinkering with her.

Hope to pick up some tips from the experts on this site.

Welcome, good score. Just be careful with the blockies though. The fines for unregistered, uninsured etc can be pretty high. Lots of helpful people here that can give you advice.

Nice looking car. What's she fitted with? The original engine and brakes or a few mods from the original?

Hello,
A very nice looking car. With a mini, you are always guaranteed a lot of learning - skills and theory.
And knowledge is easily carried!

It is standard. It has the drums all round but think I will change to discs on the front.
Seems to run well but I am thinking I will get it completely serviced when I am getting the roadworthy done for rego.
Looking forward to using it.

What fuel would be best suited. It is the standard 998.

Cheers

Should run OK on 91 or 95, I'd not use E10 in it.

Welcome to the world of minis! I also have a 1978 Leyland, and I'm based in Hobart. Is that the mini that was for sale in Moonah at the bodyworks shop? It looked very nice and clean!

For servicing I would recommend Willson Automotive in Glenorchy. They are at 39 Pitcairn St. I do most of my servicing myself these days, but they know their stuff about minis and have a good supply or parts as well. I don't think they would do roadworthy's though.

I've always just run mine on 91 fuel with valvesaver (the lead substitute).

I drove mine with drum brakes for years. The drums work just fine, but you do need to keep the maintenance up on them. Disc brakes are self-adjusting, drum brakes requires a spanner and a bit of time every second month :)

Yes the car from Talons. I watched it being tidied up over the last few years and said I would buy it jokingly when it was finished. Well I did and look forward to learning more.

I've heard about Wilsons. Got David Short doing a road worthy.

Think the drums may need adjusting then. I want to have her all running smoothly for the mini fest unsure of the dates though.

Great car and welcome! Yes, the fine for unregistered will be the least of your worries if you hit a person or an expensive car uninsured! Get onto it ASAP and then enjoy!!
