Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has any tips.. Whenever I fill my twin tanks up, they end up leaking out the top near the caps (I don't over fill the tanks), it's bad especially when parking on a hill.

Is there any ways to minimise them leaking? The fuel has now ruined my paint below the filler caps, I'm a bit skeptical to try and polish it out a bit, I'm not sure if 'fuel burn' goes right through the layers of paint, it looks rubbish now!

new filler caps.... my originals used to leak like mad, I'd tried all sorts of cork, rubber etc. etc. to make new seals and none worked. I went to my local parts shop and bought a pair of new caps and I can do a motorkhana with two full tanks....

Check the top of the filler necks is flat, some cars have had villains pry locking caps off and this bends the neck and the bayonet ramps inside.
My RH tank was so bad, I cut the neck below the rubber and welded part of a `dummy neck' to it. 2 new caps, and no leaks.

re the paint, if it's acrylic, the toluene, xylene etc present in unleaded fuel is paint thinners and will strip it. Won't hurt 2 pack.

Took the right hand cap off this morning, always seemed pretty normal to me - but the RH neck is in awful condition, it has definitely tried to be removed forcefully in the past.

Kevin, is welding the dummy necks a big job? I can't do it myself, but I'm wondering if I can find someone who can.

And yes, unfortunately it's acrylic, and ruined as the picture demonstrates.. Does that mean it's a full back respray, or do you think it can be localised to that area?

Tank has to come out.
Then I emptied it, filled and flushed with hot water, repeat.
I cut the neck, filled the tank with cold water to just below the neck, then welded the neck on with oxy acetylene (what I had at the time).
You could use MIG or TIG instead.
Then I drained the tank and dried it with a heat gun before refitting.

Check inside the tank for a rusty bottom; if it needs work, buy a fuel tank repair kit from VG auto paints. This puts an epoxy lining in the tank.
make sure the breather at top of tank is clear after lining it...!
No air in = you get no fuel out.
