Hi all, happy fathers day! I have a new RE13 cam that I was thinking of keeping in my 1275 engine for the K Project. As I have a GR 286i in my current car and I find this cam a little too aggressive for every day road use. How does the RE13 compare to the 286i?
The new engine won't be a daily driver but will be used mostly for runs and cruising. Cheers, Richard.

RE13 is pretty civilised. Works well, with good HP to 7000rpm or more. I have used it in 1098, 1310, 1360 and 1412 stroker with good results.
Max HP is @ 6500 approx.
RE282 (which I have) gives similar HP to your 286i but is far more drivable, it's not lumpy down low. I can pull away in 4th from 40-50KMH with 36mm chokes in the Dellorto. Max HP in mine is @ 7000 with 1.5 rockers.

Thanks doc, so the re13 is less lumpy down low compared to the 286i? Can you drive in 4th at 60k and pull away without changing into 3rd like my 286i?
3.4 diff.

Yes you can. RE13 pulls well from 2000 up, unlike your 286i.
It works fine with either stock, 1.3, or 1.5 rockers.

I'm happy with that, Cheers. Richard.

hello Bluecooper, what is approximately the range of your 286i ? it pull from 3000 rpm ? is it drivable under 3000 rpm ? because I'm still undecided between the 286 i and the 282. This car is only for fun the weekend and 1 or 2 trackday.

Doc do you have a video of your car with the 282 ?

thanks

Pierre

My 286i will drive under 3000 if it's a flat road. But you really need 4000rpm to accelerate away.

Sorry got no vids.. But when warm, it idles fine at 1200 rpm without loping [edit] it might lope with SUs, I dunno.
I run a 282 cam, 1.5 rockers, BIG ported head, 45 Dellorto with 36 chokes (used to have 38s in), and an LCB with 2" system.
It will take full throttle from 2500, climbs trees from 3000, and at 5000 it gets a 2nd wind and will rev to 8000 (but now limited to 7500).
It is also pretty good on fuel (compared to others with the 286i). I drove from Windsor to Rylestone via the Hunter, back via the Bell's line of road, and could have just made it home without a top up. But I had 10L in the back so tipped it in at Nth Richmond. I have twin tanks.

I did about 9 litres per 100k on the Rylstone run with 286i. But that was very light on the throttle.

I got 7.4 l/100km on the Rylstone run from Wilberforce to Rylstone for a comparison.
