My back tyres stick out slightly at the rear. I need 4-5mm taken off the spacer part of the 1" S drums to bring the wheel back inside the wheel arch and clear the shocky on the inside.
Has anyone machined about 5mm off the spacer? Any issues with doing this?

No issues at all, it's just grey cast iron.
Many moons ago, I used to machine the drum bit off and use the spacers with Honda Civic disc brakes and Mini drum swivel hubs! :)

Thanks Doc. I'll take them down to my local machine shop for a skim.
I went through all my old drums and found a 15mm spacer drum here but it only leaves 1mm clearance between the shocky and tyre.

Just ask them not to grip the drum too hard in the lathe. The drum is thin, unlike the spacer bit. You don't want it to finish up out of round.

My new drums have some hollow sections on the inside of the spacer, the old ones were solid. Be sure to check that if the spacer portion is not solid iron, that the material will not be too thin after machining.

also machining cast iron is a really dirty job it goes every where and it is BLACK :)

During my apprenticeship I used to machine new cast iron pistons for 36 & 38 class steam locos. They were about 36" ? dia from memory.

Yep - Just double checked my drums. They are new ones from MKO and the spacer isn't solid. Will have to rethink it. Image

Yes, I have those same drums, on mine there is 8mm at the thinnest part, I wouldn't machine them any thinner. That being said the original non-spacer drums are only 4mm thick, but also often cracked around the stud holes because of it.
Maybe try to find some old ones? The problem is if they are oversize, ideally you want to use shoes that are also bonded to be oversized.
All my old solid "1 inch" ones are worn over the maximum, so I can't help there.

I think you'll find your 15mm drum is actually 1/2" if it's like mine with 17mm total thickness, so 17mm - 4mm for standard = 13mm spacer (12.7mm or 1/2")

I'd use 1/2" drums and a 5mm spacer, not legal, or ideal, but perfectly safe with the correct studs.
I have a single 1/2" spacer drum that you can have, it sounds like you only have one? Well so do I. It's unworn, at 178mm.

Thanks for the offer mate. I thinks its great that folk on Ausmini will offer assistance/parts to others they have never met.
I have just put on my 1/2" spacer drum on the car and I have 4mm clearance between the shocky and tyre and a 3.5mm gap between the hand brake cable and tyre. Went for a drive and there is no rubbing. Looks like the 1/2" spacer drum is the way to go.
I measured the total thickness of the spacer from the mounting face of the drum and it measured 18.25mm. Can you check if yours is the same?

I wouldn't be machining the rims. I have Clubman S rims and they are made of thin steel to start with. It would also be a very expensive exercise to machine the rims.
I thought I was on to a winner with the 1/2" spacer drums as the one I have fitted on my rear right had 4mm clearance. Then I swapped sides and found I had 1mm clearance on the rear left - so back to the drawing board.
I have some old 1" spacer drums in storage in QLD. I will just have to wait for my next holiday to see if they are the solid type.

I've got some old spacer ones in the shed that need to go. I'll check if they are solid or not and if they are serviceable.

Edit. Orange ones are solid, just need to check diameter.
