A+ dizzies are thin on the ground over here, only late Mokes (maybe?) got an A+ motor.
That said, I put a Nissan Pulsar electronic dizzy in Barney (1293 A+). The only tricky bit was fitting the A+ drive dog, which has a smaller drive pin than the A series does. The flange on the dizzy worked OK (just) with the A+ finger clamp.
Details in my Pulsar dizzy thread.
Whatever dizzy you run, the ideal advance plate for most modded road Minis & unleaded fuel is 9-10 deg (dizzy degrees). Much more, and the motor will behave as yours does.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. The ABC needle was used in Twin Hs2 on the 1275cc Migets in early 70's. This explains a lot. I will look into getting some new needles ordered and see how it goes. kiwi the distributor part number is 42659. I tried to find out some details but could not get any info on that model.

I would stick M needles in, they work fine in twin HS2s on 998s & 1098s, with sports filters on.

Is there a needle the same as a M in a swinging version? Or should I just get the collar to make the M swinging?

Have you tried playing with this????

http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/suneedle/

..And , no ..an M is an M. The good news is that the appropriate collars are only a few bucks...and once you have one (two??) you can swap them to any other floppy needles you may acquire. On the other hand, there are oodles of needles and you may luck on one that's close......

One problem you may find is that, having identified the needle of choice, you'll find it may just not avaialable. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of SU needle profiles and not all are made for sale....

Good luck, Ian

You should be able to use the collars off your existing needles.

Hey guys. So the new M needles arrives today so I pulled the old ones out. As suggested I could use the collars from the old needles however the collar is a touch too big for the M needle so it won't grab or fit in tightly. Any advice on the best way to overcome this? Is there a collar that is more specific to fixed needle types that I need?

You could possibly solder them on.

Thanks. Figured it out.i expanded the collar a bit to get the old ones out so a bit of adjustment and I am good to go. I have everything in and back together. Just need to order a new distributor and I should be, hopefully, on the way to getting the road worthy

No haven't done anything about the vacuum advance yet. Waiting on a new distributor to arrive.

A shout out to everyone who helped out on this. I know it's been a while and I am sorry for not getting back to everyone sooner. The problem is fixed and the car is running well. What was it? Not sure. Could have been a bit of everything above but I will say the lesson here is that each Carby needs to be treated as a seperate adjustable part. New needles, coil, leads, a bit of wiring update, a new distributor and a needle and seat replacement in the bowl, all done one at a time, seemed to all add up to problem solved. Thank again everyone.
