Has a Mk 1 Cooper S distributor (no vac advance). I retarded the timing a fair bit when running low octane fuel but forget where it was. Running 98 RON fuel.

Thanks

Mikal

Loosen the dissy clamp nut, start the engine and turn the dissy slowly to advance the timing (anti-clockwise I think it is, I haven't done this for a while on a Mini) until you get the engine revs to rise and pick up to a peak, then slightly back off (turn the dissy back to retard it just a small amount). Re set the idle speed on the carb if necessary, then take it for a run and check that it doesn't ping under load. If it does, retard the dissy timing a slight bit more, and re test when driving.

Thanks Slide, that did the trick. Advanced to max rpm then backed off slightly. Was hard to start so back off a little more to cure that. Road test was good (as much as you can do in the 'burbs' anyway). Couldn't detect any detonation under hard acceleration (allowing for induction noise and noisy exhaust!). I think all is good. Thanks again..

Mikal
