I want to confirm that the cooper S had an oil canister to hold oil filter
not the spin on or off oil filter

Yes it did and it was slightly different to the standard canister. Takes an R2053P filter.

The Cooper S takes a filter that is slightly smaller in height.
I went through this with my car over ten years ago so my memory is not that fresh on the matter.
My car has an extra plate attached under the Purolator head that I believe was designed for the felt filter. I will see if I can find a photo of it.

I am looking for a metal canister bolt and washer for mk2
are they no longer available or a second hand part only

I think these are the separate part numbers. Bowl 17H1169, Bolt 37H689 , Collar 17H1172, Seal 508380

Or take a chance on these non Purolator ones for parts.

As you said that your engine was a 9FXEY I was trying to work out when the pressure switch was deleted. The parts catalogue for Somerford Mini says 1969. I was going through a few photos and it looks like the switch in the filter head was deleted sometime in the MK2 S range.

There are some photos in Ben McCafferty's resto that shows the Purolator Head without a switch. Engine number is 9FXEY55369. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=68927

There is a 2 piece for the early cooper S and a 1 piece for the later cars. I am not sure of the changeover point for Aust cars.
Here is an exploded view.

So does the photo above have an early harmonic balancer on a 9F/Xe/Y engine

Yes it does.
The later 1 piece one was same as used on Morris 1100 and 1100S.

Is there a year or changeover?
or engine number change over for this type of harmonic balancer?

I don't have an Aust parts manual to pin point the changeover.
The Somerfordmini site says 69 but most of the time the UK was ahead of us in the dates they quote.
